titanium lug bolts

Anyone gone bonkers and put out the $ for titanium lug bolts? They can save almost 1lb. per wheel.

What, save 1 lbs?!? I don't even think the 5 bolts per wheels weight that much.

I just weighed one of the stock black lugbolts on my ultra precise digital scale. They only weigh 61g/2.15oz a piece, so a set of 5 only add up to 305g/10.75oz per wheel. Given that there are 16oz in a pound, I think the conclusion from this vs the claim is self-explanatory.

Just as I thought.

The saving 1 lbs thing only makes sense if we're talking about titanium rivets on a 3-pc wheel.

Titanium is actually pretty heavy though it has a high specific strength (strength/weight). The sheer volume of metal you'd need to make the shape of the wheel would make it unduly heavy.

Hmmm -- why are the P-cars, Ferraris et al able to save .8lbs per wheel? Are their OEM bolts that much heavier? Looks pointless for our bimmers if only a few ounces can be saved.

I have no idea...but something else just crossed my mind. Lugbolts by nature sit directly infront of the hub, I don't think weight savings in that area would have nearly as much impact when rotational mass comes into play vs something like rivets and/or bolts on a 3-piece wheel (which remmib mentioned) that sit near the edges...and I think those are typically made out of titanium anyway.

Yes, as GregL was getting at. The 1 lbs. saving, I would guess, is in rotational mass savings per wheel. They may just be more of a cosmetic upgrade more then anything.
