Navi / GPS question

my friend is shopping for a pre-owned 3 series with onboard NAVI package.

he asked me questions that I don't know maybe some of you can share the idea:

1. Are all E90 + E92 built-in navigation system easy to use as oppose to some after market products?

2. Do you have to pay for annual subscription?

3. The Navi in the 3 series are not GPS, are they?

4. Anyone encounter major navi system breaks down problem before?
I guess he is worry about expire warranty issues.

I have an 06 330xi and the nav has never given me any issues at all. It isn't the easiest navigation to navigate (if you will) through. My wife's new ML is way easier to use. I also have the voice activation which makes it a lil easier I guess. But all and all, forgive me for lack of better termonlogy, but it is a pain in the ass until you get used to it.
Hope this helps.

from my point of view,

1) yes, provided they have an ounce of common sense
2) no
3) yes it is a real GPS. however maps are based off of a DVD
4) no, but know that if it does break down and you're not in warranty, its going to be $$$$$ to get BMW to fix

will need to buy a new DVD or download from torrent and burn because of new roads, etc. its simple to use, in fact, prolly the easiest ive ever seen. thats its downfall. there are many out there that are far superior to the oem navi. it merely provides me with info on how to get from A to B. others out there provide you with many other functionalities. all depends what your friend is looking for.
