New boy!

Hi there.

I think I have done this correctly and posted a hello in the correct thread.

Now just wanted to ask a couple of questions to set my mind straight. I you dont mind, please read and bare with me

I am looking at either a 335i or 335d. Now I have done many searches and read the pros and cons but if you dont mind giving your opinions, that would be appreciated.

I test drove a 330i auto, 335i man and a 335d this weekend. My aim is to get rid of my Evolved 120d (with extras) and go back to petrol. But I do a around 300 miles per week and was worred that a petrol would cost me a small fortune.

So the 330i was a thought but felt that on the A roads it was hard work fighting through the gears to catch up speed. Brakes didnt seem to do well (I have performance brakes so probably used to them) and apart from the sound I didn't get out to excited.

The 335d really surprised me how quick it was (drove it after the 335i) and how instant it pulled. Was effortless an the A roads but really find autos un-involving IMHO. But the appeal was mpg, power and crusing around with the auto.

Now the 335i, the sound alone put a smile on my face from ear to ear. The drive was very relaxing, instant in gear pull like a diesel and when I floored it well, I just couldn't stop smiling. It was involving being a manual, instant power and just ticked all my boxes. Well thats what my heart was telling me.

I reset the mpg on the 335d/i at the same point and drove the same route. Now I couldn't get enough of the 335i, so floored it loads more than the d. The results were, 23mpg for the 335i and 28 for the 335d. I was actually surprised with the 335i, thought that the way I drove it it would have been in the teens.

So with my miles, would the 335i cost me silly money and would I see that result rise over a much longer period??

Also, saloon or coupe? Front seat seems to move quite a way forward to gain access to the rear seats and the rear seats drop. But the saloon has the rear doors, but as I wont be buying new, finding a saloon with split folding seats is like rocking horse sh!t. I carry some training equipment (am a Personal Trainer) so a certain ammount of space would be useful.

Thanks for reading and very sorry it was long winded.

Regards,

Glynn.

Welcome - sounds like you have already made your mind up!!

If you can live with the auto - the D is a great car. It will cost more 2nd hand tho (than a 335i)

Diesel price is low at the moment aswell.

The coupe is spacy enough inside. As long as you dont carry 2 or more people regularly - I don't think you'd have any problems.

With over 15k going on the clock each year your depreciation is obviously going to be high, then there's the fuel consumption! Ultimately it depends what you can afford, I think you'll be looking at nearly a ton a week in fuel if you go for the 335i?

I went for the 335i Auto as I like the high revs and noise of a petrol engine. I wasn't too sure at first about the auto box because like you say I've often found them to leave you feeling too much like a passenger.

However I have to say that when the shifter is in sport mode you can still have the same feeling of being in control when flicking up through the gears with the paddle shift. The auto box switches cogs blisteringly quickly and being able to keep both hands on the steering wheel whilst planting the fun pedal enables you to stay more in control. Then there is the effortlessness the auto offers when sitting in traffic which I now wouldn't want to be without. As you can probably tell I'm 100% converted to automatics (well, the one in the 335i at least that is!).

If I were you I'd be strongly considering the 335d simply because of the fuel you'd be burning. At the moment I have an economical second car which allows me to keep the mileage on the 335i down to a more affordable level, might also be an option worth considering?

Welcome mate again!

You have test drove them both, you now need to sit down and make the decision. In reality there is nothing between them both performance wise, standard and modified. but if you are wanting to go that one step further into the world of tuning ultimately the 335i would be the car to go for!

Either choice, you will have a supreme machine!

Welcome Glynn.

Another manual 335i coupe driver here. I agree with your comments on the 330i - I felt it was hard work on my test drive and am very pleased I went forthe 335i. I do more town driving than motorway and have averaged 27 mpg over the 15,000 miles I have done since new which I think is pretty good. I'm sure you could get to the advertised combined mpg if you did a better blend of 6th gearmotorway/A road drivign than me. That mpg drops significantly if you play with the loud pedal but it rewards you totally on those occasions!!

I love my car too!!

I had had a similar decision to make albeit in Touring guise.

In the end the 335d's "party trick" of immense torque won me over. Plus it's longer range between stops (mpg doesn't worry me, stopping constantly does).

I'm very very happy with it.

Thank you for the comments ands welcomes so far.

The thought of £100 per week on fuel is mad!! I do mainly town driving and short A roads where I always floor it and average 38mpg in my Evolved 120d. So I dont recon I would be getting 27mpg like Snooky. I understand that either of the 2 will drink more than mine now but the power is calling me.

But the whole thrill of drving a petrol is more IMHO but at an added cost. I really loved the 335i but maybe from what you guys have said it will by drinking fuel for fun!

Carlos, yes either car will 100% be mapped. So maybe you will have to show me the way in yours.

Why would it be £100 on fuel ? You say you do 300 miles per week... I get 400 miles on a full tank, and I'm not exactly fuel conscious Full tank is 63 litres or so - £70 max ?

I also had to make a decision like you, a few months ago the thought of buying an automatic diesel was so against the grain for me it was riddiculous. I test drove both 35d and 35i manual. I loved the sound of the petrol and to be honest it felt quicker but i think that was just the high revs playing games with me.

I ended up buying the 35d for a number of reasons, the auto paddles felt engaging enough, the torque standard is crazy let alone since having it evolved, the mpg speaks for itself and finally the resales values of diesels are better.

Both cars are great but the diesel just edged it for me, that being said if you must have a manual then the decision is made.

Enjoy

Why does your heart say 335i ? Surely only for the manual ? Other than that I dont see what the 35i has over the diesel ? Unless your are only going to mod to within an inch of its life ? and even then the difference will be minimal.

Because it was a more exciting drive in a couple of ways TBH.

It doessn't matter how fast a derv is, it wont be the same as a high powered petrol IMHO in terms of driving experience. The way it revs (holding them in corners etc), sound (just fantastic) and was also a smoother drive. I'm not at all knocking the D, as am very interested in one. Both bloody quick.

I have thought of a 330d manual but want the smoothness of the TT and once mapped, its power

the noise and revs alone is enough to make me want a petrol. Oh wait I already have one!!! also a remapped 335i isn't exactly lacking in torque, fair enough not as much as the d equivalent but a shed load more than many performance cars out there....

A wonderful decision to be having to make - two glorious cars, each with their own pros and cons. Ultimately I went for the diesel, not really for the fuel savings as these are offset by the higher purchase price... mainly for the torque and instant overtaking grunt.

The greater range on a tank of fuel is nice... not having to stop quite so often when you're driving any appreciable distance means you get there faster!

I was initially put off the derv burner due to lack of manual gearbox as I had an e46 330d (manual) previously and it took some getting used to, though there is a considerable amount of satisfaction which can ultimately be gained in learning and using the auto box effectively. If you are really keen on fuel economy, a remapped manual 330d makes a pretty convincing argument.

Tony! mate, I get 220 miles out of a full tank!!!....but its mostly town driving....is that normal?...400 miles seems unbelievable for a 335i no matter how slow you drive!!!!...

I thought like that when I was looking but I was very wrong - either car is nice as you know - if you are worried about mpg then you have to go Derv, if you really want manual then it has to be petrol. To be honest my thoughts about the D are slight skewed as I remapped after 1 week ownership and have never looked back.

My previous car was an E46 M3 which I loved but the D is another beast altogether, it is difficult to explain the torque delivery without experiencing it.

With respect to a manual 330D that could be an option but knowing that there is a more powerful Derv available would always bother me especially if I kept seeing them on the road etc but that just me.

Lovely position to be in so enjoy the decision making !

If my 335i was a manual I would never have got rid of it.

In town I was on about 220 miles per tank - pretty much regardless of driving style.

Have fun deciding
