So taking the plunge... DSLR
So after all this time, Im going to finally buy a DSLR.
Ive narrowed it down to Nikon D5000 or the Canon T1i So what do you all recommend? |

I would point you towards the Photography forums since I suspect that us PNW'ers will tell you to go Canon, like the most of us have: Johnny has an XTi, Tuan HAD a 40D, and I think his name is Peter? I never met him, but I think he has a higher-end Canon DSLR.
Oh yeah, including me with a 5D2 ![]() If you haven't already, read through this: http://gizmodo.com/5234607/canon-reb...slr-battlemodo If you're not going to drop the money on good L lenses for the Canon, then I would avoid if build quality is what you're looking for. Canon kit lenses feel like McDonald's Happy Meal toys ![]() For a beginner, new to DSLRs, I would just go Nikon right away. I started out with them and loved everything about them until I got to full-frame. Build quality, ergonomics, and the menu interface is just so much better on these Nikons. |

I've gone from Nikon to Canon and finally am using a Sony Alpha 350.
They've all taken some really nice shots however, in the long run it comes down to the quality of the lenses you're using. I like my Sony just for the ease of use and the fact that Minolta lenses are also able to be used. I can see myself gravitating back to the Canon sanctuary soon enough though. |

+1 for Canons, I have a 40D right now and love it.. I went through 2 Xti's, the first one I sold to switch over to Nikon... couldn't do it, so I ended up buying another Xti, after a couple of months, sold that, and finally I'm settled in with my 40D.. for now
![]() ![]() James, take a look at these reviews they might or might not help.. ![]() http://gizmodo.com/5234607/canon-reb...slr-battlemodo http://www.photographybay.com/2009/0...rison-part-ii/ (I really hate this guy but his reviews are somewhat decent when it comes to explaining the camera.. now when you compare whats better... thats another story.) http://www.kenrockwell.com/canon/rebel-t1i.htm http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d5000.htm So.. if you still haven't decided yet, I would say get the T1i, but I recommend you to go and play with both the T1i and the D5000 (if you can that is..) How the camera feels in your hand is very important, you don't want to be carrying around something that is uncomfortable or awkward feeling. Overall, I think the Canons feel better in my hand, that's one of the main reasons why I moved up to a 40D, just loved how it felt.. and to top that off, I even got a battery grip to make it even more meatier ![]() |

Alright all you Canon goons, BACK OFF!
![]() Nikon vs. Canon is a lot like..... Ferrari vs. Lambo .45 vs. 9mm In other words, it is a very passionate argument! I'm a Nikon user for a few reasons, mostly that the ergonomics are better in my hands, and the controls are laid out better with respect to the control dials. Not that Canons are bad, I just prefer the Nikons. Moog55, myself, Septro and a few others at the meets are Nikon users. I say go handle each one and pick the one that feels the best in your hands. The quality on either is going to be good. Canon does have the edge on their high end glass being more affordable than Nikon's. But, the Nikon 18-200 lens stomps the Canon 18-200, so if you are looking for a single "walk around" lens and you aren't going to get caught up in GAS*, it is the better choice. But again, either brand is going to be an excellent choice. *GAS = Gear Acquisition Syndrome. In other words, a massive case of the "I wants...." ![]() Oh, and I'd take a D700 over the 5DMkII........

lol i never knew that buying a DSLR would cause so much emotion. i figure i would be shooting mostly with the 18-200 lens for now, but my friend does have a set of awesome prime lenses he loans out from time to time. I also have a Leica D-Lux4, but it's just too slow. i would love a Leica.
Also, yes this is my first DSLR. But I guess Im not a newbie to the concept? I went to UCLA flim school, so Im very comfortable shooting flim and digital video (24fps). i posted here, because i wanted to get some discussion from people i knew, makes it a bit more trustworthy you know? |
