I am going to buy my winter tires mounted on new rims (nothing fancy) and just do it myself. I figure the cost of paying someone to do it twice a year plus the hassle of doing it on the dealer/shop's schedule as opposed to my own will be balance out the extra expense.

I do it myself. But sometimes I have trouble getting the wheel off the hub and have to call my big burly brother to the scene.

i'm taking mine to a local tire shop that charges 12 dollars to replace all four. the reason i dont do it myself is that i am not good at doing anything mechanical and i am very lazy to tell you the truth. i have this picture in my mind of me trying to do this and the freak'n car falls over.

I'll see if BMW can do it for me even if I buy from TireRack. They charge $75CAD per year to store your tires and change them at each season. I don't have tons of storage space at home. Hope they don't have a problem with me buying the "non-OEM" winter setup!

I have a separate set of winter wheels and tires, but I still end up having a local shop change them for me.
First, I don't have the space to change them. Second, I don't even have a jack. So I just put 2 in the trunk, 2 in the back seat (folded down) and they change all 4 in a matter of minutes. I got a set of "Tire Totes", so I don't have too much trouble moving the tires. I stack them all on one of those luggage carts my building provides.

I bought winter wheels/tires and do it myself.
2.5 ton hydrolic jack - $14.98 @ Advanced Auto Lug Nut Breaker Bar - $3.98 @ Big Lots Biggest hassle is cleanning them and taking them up 3 flights of stairs...

I do it myself because I have the room in my garage to do the changeover and store the set not on the car. I use an floor jack from Sears and wait to the night/day before the first snow storm prediction. I like messing with my car, and since it's relatively easy, I enjoy it. Things you'll need if you go the do it yourself route:
1) A floor jack 2) 17mm large socket 3) breaker bar 4) torque wrench 5) wood block (or hockey puck) for the jack adapter If you do it yourself you really should torque the bolts to the appropriate setting. If you do a search you'll see more detailed threads on the items needed to DIY.

You shouldn't use your torque wrench for removing lug bolts, only for tightening them.
