335 to sti?

my lease is up soon and im deciding what i should get. I dont really care about luxury too much, but i care about speed. how many people on here came from sti's? headache to build? what other options do i have? im going for used somethin between 350-400$ a month. i like having a car i can do work on.

This was just discussed with an Evo - really most of what's said there directly relates to this.

My lease was up last week, I was in the same boat, but I used to have a sti, and went to 335xi.
Sti cost alot to make power.
I got a used 135i, couldn't be happier. And it's faster than the 335xi!!
I got it for $27500

ST WHY ..... Honestly, consider the EVO. The flat four engine is a lot easier to mod than the boxer engine. But honestly be prepared for a crappy interior bumpy ass ride and a shit load of traffic tickets. Oh and every car with a fart can wanting to race you. Enjoy

I owned a 05 STI. It was a great commuter. Fun, lots of torque, and great AWD (made it throught some pretty nasty weather in the passes between Oregon and California). I test drove an Evo and I can say, I hated it. Felt cheaper than a Kia. The STI felt much better, and had better reliability and resale as well. But I hated the way it looked....

I'm coming from a 2004 STi and it was one of the best cars I've owned when it came to best bang for you mod money. Cobb AP Flash+Turbo Back Exhaust= approx 330-350AWHP for less than $2000.

Check out NASIOC.com for tons of information about those cars.

Man were are the evo guys at. Anyways, you really need just to test drive the STI. I personally think the 04 STI is the best looking STI ever. The new one looks like Kia and Subaru had a little accident after a long day of drinking and smoking out. Its just ugly and I mean F@cking ugly. But just in case you want some info on the Evo check out:

i'm also considering an evo as well.. but from my knowledge the sti has better reliability, also i owned a 2004 lancer ralliart and the interior was exactly like mine except different seats, even same gearbox. The sti has better overall interior IMO. i was also looking at used 135 and used 335xi's.. 335xiRT1, do you make payments on your 135i? ive searched and there are not alot of used 135's in my area but ive seen a few 335xi that are maybe in my price range.. Its so hard to choose cause there are so many options!!

I don't think I'd bother with an AWD car in Florida. Find yourself something fun and RWD. Used 135 would be a good option if you don't need 4 doors.

Evo's make more power for the same $$ but I think the fit and finish is a tad better on the Subaru. Keep in mind both the EVO and STI are hopped up economy cars. That doesn't bother me just something to keep in mind. They will be cheaper to fix and work on than a BMW of course.

AWD is not for bad weather.

It's for stomping the throttle and GOING - immediately.

Even if the torque is obscenely high.

Oh I know it has many performance applications and Florida gets a fair amount of rain its just not really necessary as it adds weight and has more parasitic drivetrain loss.

Also if you really want to mod it you'll need forged pistons. The rest is forged but the ringland can go on stock motors. In the end try lots of cars and pick what you like best is the way to go.

I may be in the same boat in a year. I had an '05 STI and I miss that car a lot. It was so much fun to drive. While a lot of people think the new hatch is ugly (I did also at first), I am starting to like the practicality, reliability and easy DIY maintenance on that car. I know they have had some motor issues with the '08's and '09's. Hopefully that gets better in the future.

The motor issues on the 08/09s are sporadic, a very small percentage of the cars have em.

If you are looking for speed, go after the american v8s. They make serious hp AND tq for cheap. The C6 in particular is well done, relatively light, terrific power stock with room for much more. And there are really good deals right now...

I personally woudn't do it.

I had an Evo 8 prior to the 335i. I drove my friend's Evo X and the new STi...I wouldn't go get either of the two. It's the small ergonomic stuff that seals the deal for me.

ive always been an Evo guy but after I got a ride in my friend's 06 UGM STi...it was all over.

the 08 sti is agood alternative so is the Evo X GSR (proper gearbox). Mitsubishi just came out with a new trim line for the Evo X called the Evo X MR Touring which includes a bootlid lip spoiler instead of the big extended wing in the back and a few other stuff.

Isn't a flat four the same as a boxer engine, which is also the same as a horizontally opposed motor? Did you mean inline 4 for the Evo?

Getting back to the original question, I think we'd need some more specifics to offer suggestions.

The main thing is do you need four doors? Or even 4 seats for that matter. If not the 370z, Camaro SS and 135i are all good options. The Camaro will be cheapest to maintain and work on. There is also a large aftermarket for the LS and VQ engines.

If you need one car to do it all and plan on carrying some stuff and people the STI is a good option. The Evo's seats don't even fold down.
