OEM BMW E90 M3 Sedan Rear Spoiler

Hey guys! This is my first post on the E90 forum. I recently purchased my 328xi and this site has provided a wealth of information. I would like the opportunity to return the favor with this quick DIY for the M3 Sedan Rear Spoiler.

Materials Used:

E90 M3 Sedan Rear Spoiler
Adhesive Two-Sided Tape (included with the spoiler)
3M Automotive Adhesive, Wax, and Mark Remover (purchased at Pep Boys)
Cloth (to apply the adhesive remover)
Latex Gloves (used when applying the adhesive remover)
Measuring Tape
Scotch 3M Painter's Tape (1" Width)
Scissors (needed to cut adhesive tape)
Four popsicle sticks
Wax
Wax Applicator
Cloth (to remove wax)
Extra pair of hands

I spent weeks going back and forth between the E90 rear deck spoiler and the M3 rear spoiler. I took my vehicle into BMW one afternoon for a scheduled service appointment. On the showroom floor was a 2009 M3 and the vehicle was enticing in everyway...including the rear spoiler. As a result, my decision was made.

I ordered my spoiler from Tischer BMW. These guys are awesome and within a few days my spoiler had arrived. I decided to go with the primed spoiler. When I purchased my 328, I had some work done at a local certified BMW body and paint shop. I was impressed with their work so I figured I would just take the spoiler back to them.

M3 Sedan Rear Spoiler primed:

Adhesive Tape, included with the spoiler:

M3 Sedan Rear Spoiler painted with Black Sapphire Metallic (475):

3M Adhesive Remover:

The first step was to use to use the adhesive remover. Using a cloth diaper, I lightly rubbed the area that would eventually receive the rear spoiler.

Secondly, I referred to the photographs and video I took of the 2009 M3 Sedan on the showroom floor. These proved to be a great reference for duplicating the amount of reveal the spoiler should allow.

M3 Stock Installation (left side):

M3 Stock Installation (right side):

This is the link to view the short video clip of the M3:

I used a 0.5 inch measurement from the edge of the trunk lid to the tip of the spoiler's edge.

3M Painter's Tape was used for installation guidelines.

Next, it was time to apply the adhesive tape. The corners came pre cut and were applied first.

I elected to expose the three factory holes so that the hollow spoiler could breathe. I used the "gutters" on the spoiler to guide the adhesive tape. Please note that a little extra adhesive tape was provided. Consequently, I had to cut about six inches off the roll.

After the adhesive tape was applied, with the backing still intact, I did one more test run to ensure that I was happy with my measurements and tape guides.

To avoid adhering the spoiler in the incorrect location, I used four popsicle sticks to "catch" the spoiler.

Ready for application, the red backing of the adhesive tape was removed all at once:

Now, I had the assistance of another pair of hands (thanks Dad). If this is an option for you, I highly recommend it. The left and right corners of the spoiler were aligned using the painter's tape. I aligned the left corner as my father simultaneously aligned the right corner. When satisfied with the alignment, the corners (only the corners) were pushed down with enough pressure to activate the adhesive.

Closely inspecting the remaining reveal of the spoiler, the popsicle sticks were removed one by one. If you are careful not to apply pressure to the mid-section of the spoiler, the popsicle sticks will easily slide out. The application was finished by placing a good bit of pressure (enough to give your rear suspension a slight workout) along the entire span of the spoiler.

I admired the install for a few moments. Sporty yet, modest, it was exactly what I was going for.

Now…back to work.

To get that protection and shine back, I reapplied wax to the trunk and to the spoiler.

The Wax buffed off:

Here are some pictures of the final product:

Thank you for the positive comments. I appreciate it. I'm very happy with the results of this spoiler. I look forward to completing a few more projects as soon as my bank account allows it. This stuff is addicting.

You did an excellent job!! I just put one on my 328i sedan. I debated whether to put on the bigger spoiler also. Glad I went with the M3.

M3 Rear spoiler

Amazing how a little spoilerlip gives a result like that.

Great modification, i orderd one for my Japanrot E90 as well.

Because i got the high-gloss window-trim i think i'll go for high-glos on the spoiler as well!

Thanks for the great post!

This was a great write up. The OP's technique and measurements were spot on especially for someone with OCD like me...lol Only thing different I did was take the 3M adhesive to the very tip of the spoiler. I figured the tip had the least amount of 3M tape so it needed to extend to the edge. Thanks!

Where can I buy the adhesive tape at? My brother accidently threw mine away when he threw away the box. I have some double sided tape lieing around somewhere but I looks like I would be too thick.

Home depo, staples or hardware store Get double sided tape heavy Duty, there's a 6ft length that was perfect and cheaper than the the longer one. Worked fine and is the same quality that BMW provides, it has held up very good through the elements .
