New Golf R20 going Stateside

Volkswagen is unveiling the second new R model in its current lineup at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The Golf R shares its basic underpinnings with the recently-unveiled Scirocco R. It also adds VW's 4Motion AWD to its architecture.

Replacing the heavy naturally aspirated 3.2-litre V6 found in the Golf V R32 is a 2.0-litre petrol turbo engine. Power is 195kW (265hp) and torque is around the 350Nm mark. The 0 - 100km/h time should be covered in about 5.5 seconds for the 6-speed manual and 5.4 seconds for the DSG model. These figures compare very well with the Audi S3 and the TT S with which the Golf R shares its engine.

If you thought it would be a basic upgrade on the GTI you'd be wrong. The car features a host of changes including new front grille with LED daytime running lights, a different set of wheels, R side sills, R badging at the rear and those twin tailpipes almost come together in the middle. The interior is much sportier as well with two-tone sports seats, aluminum pedals and R badging in places like the flat-bottomed steering wheel.

The good news for US fans is that the Golf R is headed for North America according to reports, although nothing has been confirmed for its 3-door Scirocco relative.

Footie, you are just jealous that your new Jag-yoo-war does not have LED DRLs :P

Yeah, I know.

But it does come with revolving air vents and a gear selector that raises from the center console, now how cool is that.

Mad cool, until you realize that you spilt coke all over your center console and the gear lever selector knob thingy is stuck, in reverse

So it basically an APR tuned 2.0 FSI or TSI motor.

This looks to have a great price to luxury/performance/practicality ratio. It has been confirmed to be coming to the states? I wonder if we'll get the 5 door.

Far from it. . . It's 270HP stock, meaning this thing chipped will be fast as hell

If the price is reasonably, I may have gotten this over the 128. Kind of like I would have gotten a MS3 if it would have been AWD.

Would make a good second, family car if they bring the four door. I was still bummed that the US didn't get the 4 door R32.

Higher power, AWD Gti... how can you not have fun with that?

This might be my next DD...hopefully it's actually faster than the GTI 2.0T unlike the R32 which is essentially identical in speed and less tossable but featuring AWD.
