My Engine Management Hell. Help Please!
Hi Guys
I need your advice about what action I should take with BMW. I have a 335i and I have problems with a cold start the car starts to judder and drops to 500 revs and below and will cut out. The first couple of times it happened I got the reduced power engine fault message in the I drive. The car has gone in three times 1) First time BMW said it was a software upgrade, they did the upgrade and a week after same problem. 2) Second time i'm told it was ignition coils, two coils replaced, week after same problem. 3) Third time blocked injector and software problem. ECU reset and injector replaced, the engine mangement light now comes on in the dash no longer in the I drive. I think they are trying to be clever by resetting the codes. week later same problem BTW the car went in with a 1/4 tank of fuel came back virtually empty with only a 3 mile range on the clock barely made to the petrol station. So complained to BMW and the customer service manager at the dealership is involved. She told me to bring the car in and said that she would test the car for a few days. So i've dropped the car off this morning. They have given me a replacement car, and said that they would give me a full tank of fuel to make up for the mistake of running my car down. (taking the piss really I think) I'm waiting for them to get the car right, god knows when that will be but wanted to know if there is anything I can get out of BMW for all this hassle. I was thinking about asking them to extend the warranty. Any Ideas. Cheers Taj |

Mine does that on a cold start, engine starts fine but then drops revs for a second or so almost stalls and then picks up. Otherwise fine. Not sure what to do

Get the car sorted first, keep a written note of all your grievancies, then go and see them afterwards. You don't want to get their back up whilst they've got your car! |

May be my post wasn't clear I was asking what I could get out of them once the car is sorted. The car is a late 2007 57, I've had it for two months and I bought it of a mate who had no problems with it

If its a genuine fault and they fix it for free, then I suppose they've done their bit.
You've got over 12 months warranty left by the sounds of it, so AFAIK you can't arrange BMW extended warranty until <1 month is left, so thats probably not an option. But as they've messed you around a bit, most dealers I know would try to palm you off with a free brolly or a BMW F1 cap.... |

That fiixed a miss-fire problem I had. They had to order the plugs in though and said they'd done it to a few customers 335i's and it had sorted problems. I thought it was strange that they didn't ahve them in stock, but i guess if it raelly is a common problem that would explain it.

Just an update I got the car back after the plugs were replaced. I had the same problem a week later. The car went in again this time three injectors were replaced. I got the car back yesterday and i'm sure its now suffering from turbo lag. It also doesn't sound as aggresive as before. I don't know what to do now. I'm starting to think that may be I should get rid of it now

You need to get your car into a service team that knoww what they're doing with the car - contact Kevin Strauss at BMW Battersea (020 7819 2600) and book your car in there. The techs there are fully up to speed with all the problems involving the 335i, not limited to injectors, coil packs, turbo lag fixes, rattling wastegates, and busted cyclone separators in the cam cover
Trust me, the 335i engine is great when it's working properly - you just need people who know how to fix it and make it right!

Thanks for that mate. I live in Hayes West London so will be a bit of a mission, but I will give them a try as I would like to get it sorted and you're about the 335i engine it really is meant to have blistering performance especially when you engage the paddleshift.

E92Fan's direction on this will most definately have the car sorted. Well worth travelling the extra distance and having the problem corrected once and for all. Good luck. |

hi taj
i'm from hayes as well, i hope its not berry heathrow u gave it too!! gave my car there today, i have a problem with the battery whereas it gives the message battery charge very low on i drive, i gave my car to my original dealer (taplow) who charged it up last wk and said to monitor it, day later got the same message so i thought i 'll book it into heathrow (1 mile away) told them what my original dealer had done, droped it off about 9ish, i rang about 4ish to get an update then they rang back at 5ish to say they have checked the battery and have charged it up, oh cos thats not covered under warrenty its chargable. but i told u when i booked it my original dealer has already charged it up and now i'm getting the same message. ok in that case u need to book it in again as they need to do a diagnostics test on the battery, its the only way to claim under warrenty, that will take another whole day. such a waste of time these ppl. sometimes i such wanna give it to a really good local indy who can do the battery all in for around £75. i've heard good things about the battersea dealer as i believe they r actual bmw not franchise. let us know how u get on. |

Hi
It's Berry Chiswick on the Great West Rd. It must be the same place. The car just feels shitty i'm gonna have to take it to Battersea just like e92fan and Sal suggested. I really am thinking of selling the car now but i'll give these guys a try, fingers crossed. |

When you book it in at Battersea, follow my instructions as per my post above. Kevin is very clued up on dealing with problem cars and he'll be sympathetic to your experiences to date. Ask him if he can get the Master Tech, to get involved with the car. Tell Kevin you're off the forum

No, we don't have HPFP problems here generally, and that's due to the lower amount of ethanol present in our gasoline compared to you in the States.
The main problems with the cars here are fuel injectors and coil packs, but that's the same situation worldwide with these new direct injection BMWs.

Cheers E92Fan i'll mention all those things, i did try and get hold of him last week but no joy, will try later this week. I think if they manage to sort it i'll keep the car and go the whole hog Quaife LSD first and then a remap. I agree with you about the 335i engine, on the odd occasion that it worked properly it was something else.

Hi Guys
The car's at Battersea. The Head's been removed and been sent away to be chemically cleaned. The master tec has said that this is necessary as this will then allow him to see the running values of the car against what it should be. They have been very good so far, they definately know what they are talking about and are very ameanable Anyway I should get the car back on monday i'll keep you guys posted. I've had a good experience so far. Taj Last edited by taj; 11-27-2009 at 01:05 PM.. |
