BMW oil
As we all know by now, there are 3 oils approved by BMW for LL service; BMW 5W30, Castrol 0W30 and Mobil 1 0W40. Mobil 1 5W30 is not approved, but BMW does recommended it according to the NA service manual.
I decided to go with the BMW oil, but the bottle does not show that it even conforms to LL01/04 specifications. Additionally, this formulation is supposedly from Castrol Europe, but it is made in the U.S. Part no. is 07 51 0 017 866. Did the dealer give me the wrong oil?

Your are right, there is no LL-01 or LL-04 approval listed. Odd. However it does state "…for use in all BMW cars with gasoline engines,…", so it must be at least LL-01.
Frankly I think that BMW NA has this oil thing all scr*w*d up. Different statements in different manuals, apparently different oils in BMW dealerships in Europe than in the United States, and no oil/coolant heat exchanger in the American cars. And then the fur ball about Mobil 1. In Europe there is a 5W-30 and a 5W-40 with LL-0* approval, but not here in the United States where only the 0W-40 carries it. But BMW NA tells people that Mobil 1 5W-30 is the thing to use, even though it is ACEA A1. I am changing mine at 7500 miles and not worrying about it. Oil from the dealer while under warrenty, then probably Mobil 1 0W-40. |
