runflat wear
in a letter in this months BMW Car mag it states that Bridgestone are investigating the uneven and premature wear on the 19" runflats, ive given the dealer one of mine to send back to them for comment, insides have about 500 miles left while the other 90% of the tyre has about 5000 left

Well I have suffered it on non runflats for like forever.
Its the massive negative camber our cars run.

There's a thread on PH about this....
http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/t...eating%20tyres! I can't believe people are saying that this guy's lucky to be getting 17,000 miles out of a set of tyres? Surely he should be getting more than that?! I'd be expecting about 20,000 miles at least surely? |

I changed mine from Contis to Nokian Z RFTs around Christmas last year and have done 9k miles since then. The fronts have 6mm left but the rears only 3.5 -4mm. Is it worth rotating them?

i purchased a used one (front passenger) about the same tread life as my other 3. After having it replaced, the car seem to pull a little to the left now. Anyone have an idea what might cause this. Sorry, didn't mean to hijack this tread, but i figure we're on the subject of RFT.

Check the obvious first; tyre pressure and check that the wheel is balanced properly - these are the most common causes when all was OK previously.

tire pressue is fine and I watched the shop balanced the wheels and put those wheel weights in it. That's pretty much it.

It all depends on your style of driving and the roads you drive on.
I only got 8k miles on the rears of my 535d sport touring and 9k miles on the 335i. The next person may get 20k if they don't drive hard. Plus everyones definition of 'driving hard' is completely different as well. I remember when I had my E46 320d touring, I was getting around 34mpg (auto) and a mate was getting 45mpg from his car, exactly the same. He said he drove it hard. Then one day we went down to Surrey from Norwich, I told him to reset his OBC and follow me, he did and when we got back both were showing 38mpg. He also said that maybe he didn't drive quite as hard as he thought he did either. |

I've just remembered.
When I first got my 535d the rear tyres were new, runflats, I then did 9000 miles in around 10 weeks. Went to Paris, Geneva, Paris again, St. Tropez and then down to London a lot with work for 2 weeks. I ditched the run flats, and when I took them off there was over 6.5mm left on them, so if I had kept doing loads of journeys on the Autoroute I could have probably got 35k miles out of them. It is all about the type of driving and how good your roads are. |

This is what my rear tyres looked like after about 20k miles. As the OP had, the majority of the tyre still had about 4-5mm left, but the inside edge was down to canvas.
I took the car back to BMW and they tested it and adjusted the wheel alignments, which were out, but I remain unconvinced that this will solve the wear problem.

mine are not quite that bad but i reckon within another 1000 miles and they would be, this is without doubt not natural wear, am waiting to hear what the dealer comes back with from bridgestone.

I wonder how many 3 series cars are running around with badly worn tyres like that with the drivers blissfully unaware?

Thats exactly how my tyres looked, I got 16K out of my RFT's before my blow out but have switched to Falken 452's NON RFT.
Observations for people on 19" 225's: You must get your tyres balanced whilst using the bolts holes and not the center cap hole. Believe it or not the centre cap hole is not the centre of wheel - it is what they call cosmetically centre, whilst the bolt holes will be dead center as this is what the wheel runs off. To prove this I had my tyres balanced where I had them fitted, I then took a drive to wheels in motion for a full KDS (which was also out on camber badly) and had my wheels rebalanced (they where 50grms out per corner). Also since running runflats done a 1000 miles now - the car behaves completely different, the handling is now predictable, precise and the ride is much much smoother. Who ever made the decision to put run flats on these cars at BMW must be sacked - worst idea ever especially now that I have tried RFT's and NON RFT's. If you have RFT's get them changed now best mode ever !

I had inside wear on rear RFT's which was picked up by the dealer on my 18k oil change.
They recommended that they needed 'urgent attention' (of course). I was also advised to run 0.2 bar over the recommended figures, as inside wear was often associated with a combination of under-inflation and the agressive set-up I ran the rears for another 6k miles, keeping a close eye on the wear and regularly checking pressures. The insides barely wore any further, with a more noticeable wear-spread across the whole tyre. At no point was I down to cord. Changed the whole set to non-RFT's at 24k miles and do not regret it one bit.
