2010 335i fitted with one TURBO????
It was posted in another thread, but what are the implications to tuning when BMW converts their 2010 335 to one twin-scroll turbo if its true...BMW claims that it will produce the same power as their twin turbo N54 engine...I heard of exterior changes made to the 2010 models, but nothing about the engine, and this change totally made my jaw drop, and also made me happy at the same time knowing that I already own the car that I have with two snails....Here is the link...What do you guys think about the future of the 335i in respect to tuning, and if the one twin-scroll turbo is better than the two turbo system that we have now...

I'm no turbo expert, but I think you can tune a single better, and if this turbo makes just as much power as our twins then it must be larger.. so you can probably swap it out and put an even larger single.. wow! |

while a single is easier to tune... the engine has VVT or whatever which makes it very difficult to tune. close to impossible... least that was my interpretation. ppp

Car Magazine is assuming that the N55 (engine from the new 5 series GT) will trickle down to the E92/3 facelift. Information on the engine has been out for a while, but it hasn't been confirmed if it'll be in this upcoming model.

The issue with swapping a turbo is that the ecu calls for a boost value and the bigger turbos have issues achieving the desired boost in a short enough timeframe to keep the ecu happy. Also the wastegates being controlled by vacuum as opposed to boost pressure makes swapping hard. Is the single in the n55 controlled by vac or boost pressure? I'll bet the ecu architecture will be very different.

Damn single turbo would be sick. I bet ams would come out with a biger single turbo kit for N55 before N54. Or maybe we could just take the N55 single turbo and bolt it on to the N54 dreams or ??

335s are getting this single turbo and the new M3 are getting the twin turbos...I don't see how this single turbo N55 will be made to out perform what we have now or even come close, especially when they have the Ms slated to have twin turbos. IMO I feel the only reason is to detune the 335 and make the M more powerful and attractive since the 3 series M that is out today hasn't faired well against the 335 as for sales...

Hmmmm it will be interesting to see real world results, I have a feeling that the N55 will not dissapoint and will hopefully be less problematic!

I really doubt BMW will put the N55 in the facelift for such a short period. It makes more sense to introduce the engine with new models from the start.
A standard N55 will for sure be better then a standard N54, Max torque is 100 RPM earlier then with the N54, max output and torque are the same. Regarding tuning I doubt if it is as good as the N54 though... |

How could a single turbo be better than twin aside from cost to mod perspective?
Doesnt the advantage of a twin turbo system lie in its ability to generate more boost at lower RPM's and create a wider power band? |
