Gen 3 iPod update - Final

I had written to BMWNA recently to express my dissatisfaction at the rumors that the Gen 3 iPod would not be supported by the new MOST adapter. This despite the press release announcement of 4/12 and their official website stating it would be supported.

Today at the request of Mr. Purvis' office, I received a personal call to explain the situation. The net of the situation is that BMW made the decision to pull support after they could not get the repeat and random functions to work through consultation with Apple.

The person I spoke with was very apologetic but said there was nothing they could do, so I view this as closed. I let them know how disappointed I was with the way this was handled.

Finally, I also expressed my displeasure with the pricing aspect of this. I don't know how much research you all have done, but here locally I know that it will cost about $600 to get the part and the adapter installed. $270 for labor which is 2 hours here. At this point I hope a factory installed option is offered similar to what they do for Sirius satellite radio as that's probably the only way I will do this in the future.

As an aside, despite the steep price, I know that several 5 and 6 owners down here in Palm Beach have already gotten this installed in their cars so the price doesn't bother everyone.

I've been trying to decide whether to get the IPOD interface or the sat radio installed....mostly due to the outlandish cost of the installation for the IPOD.

Dr. Powers,

I am in Maryland north of you. Let me know which dealer you go with if you get the i-pod adapter. I am thinking about the i-pod adapter but it is pricey. I have the sirius radio and it is great. Sometimes spotty in my area ex. Norbeck road near Georgia.

Is the "new MOST adapter" the same as the "iPod integration kit" available for the 335i?

Will the iPod integration kit work with the newer Nano devices? I understand these are "2nd generation", but found the following info on wikipedia.com:

While the I/O port on the nano is identical to the previous generation, the position of the I/O port on the 2nd generation nano is approximately 4mm to the left compared with the first generation models. Therefore the distance between the docking port and the headphone jack has increased. The implication is that many of the nano accessories (made by Apple as well as companies such as Belkin and Griffin), such as docking cradles, some FM transmitters and other similar products, do not fit.

Does the BMW iPod integration kit have a fixed input for the audio, or is that not a concern?

The iPod adapter works no problem with the 2nd Generation Nano. Just make sure you have the latest updates installed. I think iTunes 7.0.1 added another new version of the firmware for the new nanos. 7.0 added one too!

Wow, thanks Steve. That makes me feel a lot better.

Uh, why's your Nano pink?

That's kind of a personal question, no? Actually, I am not going to blame it on my wife, whose iPod is white. Mine is actually black, but with the Xtreme Homer Simpson iPod cover on it. So here's the answer: It's not my iPod! It belongs to my employer.

RE: "personal question" - LOL.

Just a quick update. I went out and got an 8 GB Nano tonight. Forget the car. I can't even get it to work with my COMPUTER! Been trying for hours with no luck. I'm gonna have to go exchange it tomorrow.

And... bringing back on topic... I hope to have the thing working by the time I pick up my car in a couple weeks.

Assume you are using iTunes to load the device. Since I'm coming up on a terabyte of music and I can't obviously load all of that to my iPod, I've found that smart playlists are the easiest way to go to deal with music. I'll typically build these lists based on artists and prune out out albums I don't want like complilations and the like that repeat tracks from their studio album counterparts. This is the way I use my gen 3 via the AUX port today.

How do you find the sound quality through the aux port? Does it sound good at high volumes and low?

BTW - I exchanged the iPod for a new one this morning and the new one works perfectly. Just goes to show that even something with no moving parts that fits in the palm of my hand is subject to quality control issues. Gotta admire auto manufacturers' steep challenges with thousands of parts to deal with!

Has anyone tried to install the Ipod adaptor for the E90 themselves?
