Advice for exchanging my car

Im thinking of exchanging my car for possibly a 6 month old BMW in MARCH 2010. Here is what i have:

Current Car
1.8d SE saloon, 57 plate BMW, metallic paint with around 12k on the clock (low mileage)

No leather etc etc....

Car i would like
I would like to get a 6 month old:

1.8d SE New shape saloon
with leather

Ok, nothing fancy for some of you guys, but with my experience last time, purchasing a new car i would rather have my homework done before i do anything. So looking around my old car is worth around £15000 (Could i get more?), i cant find another car close to what im after yet but the dealer tells me he will "keep a look out".

I dont think he will keep a look out for my pocket but wondered what kind of price should i pay if i exchange my car in order to get the car i would like? What would be considered a bargain? Also rumour is the 15% VAT will be increased after December - should i keep this in mind OR should i consider purchasing this year (i think this is applicable to brand new cars only, not 6 month old?)? Remember i would like to purchase next year in March.

Thanks for any advice.

VAT is only applicable to a new car and yes as far as I know teh VAT rate is going up next year to 17.5%. So new cars will cost 2.5% more next year.

VAT on secondhand cars is charged on the dealers margin so the 2.5% increase will only make a £50 to £75 increase.

ECBMW,

Keep searching on the BMW used car website, see what the cars are up for. A dealer won't do anything for you.

Also, its quite hard to do a straight swap but end up with a better car IMO. Maybe you could look at adding some money too if you can?

VAT on a used car will depend on the individual vehicle and its VAT history, so you need to ask specifically, although mostly you will pay no VAT on your invoice.

Sorry what i mean to say is if i do a swap with the dealer, whats the maximum i should pay to give in my car and get the car i would like, i.e. pay another £4000 to get the car i would like?

Ill keep a look out on their site.

Thanks

Edit: Ive amended the orginal post to better explain my question.

So all you want to do is trade in your car for another, younger, better equipped one.....

That happens every day of the week !!

You will just have to find a car to the spec you want at the price you can afford....

Just keep looking!
