Changing Tires Yourself

Who changes their tires themselves (summers to winters)?

I'm thinking of doing this myself but would like to know more about lift points on the 2009 335xi. Also, any issues that others may have seen/encountered.

2006 325i, e90  [0.00]
I used the jack from a 2006 Lexus RX330... apparently jacks from most Toyota's fits exactly into the rubber jack points on the BMW... go figure... even the lug wrench fit to loosen the nuts.

then I used a torque wrench from crappy tire to tighten them up... pretty easy job.. saved the $80 or so TC BMW wanted in labour...

if you're changing wheels then a jack and torque wrench will easily accomplish this task...but if you're talking about swapping the tires..i don't think there's any easy way to do it without a machine....there's always that fire/explosion way to mount it, but not unmount

Did you use a hydraulic floor jack? How much did you spend on a torque wrench? Canadian Tire has them starting at $20.

Did your Canadian Tire torque wrench work ok? Which one did you get?

What do you set the torque to on the wrench?

Just be careful with non OEM jacks... someone had used a Lexus jack on their BMW in this forum and it gave in... so he had serious damage on his rims and his car...

Even than, a floor jack is best, those scissors jack is meant for temporary work.

If you use a floor jack, get a jack adapter so it won't crush the plastic jacking point.

just jack on lifting points on one side...high enough that both front and rear wheels are off the ground. *remember to loose the bolts first.

changing a set of 4 wheels/tires, should not take more than 20-25 mins. I must of done it 100+ times.

Use something like this one from CT, which I have and it's great. Even fits under the car in front to jack under the cross member jack point there:

CT Floor Jack

Leave the emergency scissor jack for just that -- emergencies.

If you going to change your own tires, do invest a good hydraulic floor jack with jack adaptor and torque wrench. Don't go cheap or you might damage the car at the end if you go cheap.

I'm interested in the socket size myself. I lost my torque wrench's bit, and want to replace it.

+1...even better....get a cordless impact power drill...they on sale at crappy tire....with full battery...we were able to take off lugs that were torqued to 180ft/lbs.....gonna make my life a lil easier for track days...lol...

The one from crappy tire is really crappy... it cracked when I use them... it's not really suited for this kind of work with this kind of torque... that or I bought a really cheap one from crappy tire...
