Moving to California, Need Help
I'm moving to California from GA and need help with my radar detector. I have it hardwired currently and mounted with the suction cup mount on the windshield between the iDrive and Instrument cluster bulges. From what I gather it's illegal to have it mounted with a suction cup mount in California. How do you guys mount it? Do you have any pictures? I'm not really a fan of the visor mount. It's a Passport Escort 8500 in case that's important, my V1 died last month .

it isnt illegal to have suction cups.
Atleast I run suction cups and have never had any trouble when being pulled over.

Actually, he is correct. Until recently, it was illegal to have anything mounted on your windshield in California.
With portable GPS units becoming so popular, the law was recently amended to allow a GPS to be mounted on the window, but only in the far left corner. The center of the windshield can still get you a ticket. I don't think this is actively enforced much, but the OP is right that his mount is technically against state laws.

I have one of those sticky rubber pads and I just slap it on the top of the dash between the iDrive and instrument binacles. The RD sits on that. Works like a charm and never moves.

It's definitely a law, but as everyone has stated, it's loosely enforced. I have my radar detector right above my rear view mirror.

I think radar is pretty much the last thing cops will ticket you for. If they do say anything, it'll be a snide comment about how much the radar was helping you out.

That is what I would do. At WORST, you'll get a fix-it ticket.

Military bases require their decals to be placed on the windshield, too. I don't see those folks getting tickets for that...
