Interior heater/climate fans

Hi All,

Can anyone help please?

Three days ago whilst driving home, my interior fans gave up the ghost. The display still says they are operating at half speed and no matter what switches you press they do not work still. I have checked fuses etc, but no luck. Anyone seen this problem or better, know the solution?

Regards to you all in anticipation of some clever answers,

What year is the car and what software version is it running?

I've noticed mine have started to make a "squeaking" noise when they are on low settings, but they still work - I hope mine are not on their way out too !!

Mine did that - replaced under warranty due to failing fan bearings.

Hi.

If they aren't working AT ALL on any speed, but the climate control panel still looks totally normal then you've probably lost your final stage resistor. In the E46 it was known as a "hedgehog resistor" and its a very common fault. Infact, I had it with my E90.

Its a warranty item, or outside of warranty: 1 hours labour and a £50 part.

Does it make any difference?

I'd go with Mega on the e46 for sure with the output resistor - I don't know if the e9x is the same but it's a good place to start.

Yes, I think it is a valid question as the username [BS03WDS] seems to give the impression we aren't dealing with an E9x car here........

Perhaps not but I don't see the relevance of the software version.

Exactly the same fault for me this morning ... E90 though.

Really bad time of the year for this to happen as well

I take it the fuse box is located behind the Glove compartment ??

.

Cheers.

Heater fans

Hi All,

Just so happens my daughter started dating a BMW technician and he fixed it.
It was the hedgehog resistor. Charged me £90 including the part and took it to work to do it.

So there you are folks, get your daughters engaged to BMW techies.

Thanks for all your trouble and advice.

He's not trying to impress his future father-in-law very much is he? The part is only £47. Looks like there was a nice drink in it for him.

That sounds a little harsh. He did take it to work and apart from the VAT content, the remaining charge was for the hook to the diagnostic equipment.

I, for one, remain impressed. Oh and I did not have to wait 3-4 days to book it in.

It's hard to do in that it's a b*stard to get at unless you are double jointed with tiny hands.

Fair play to him - and thanks for letting us know how you've got on.

I had the faulty hedgehog issue in my E46 coupe. After a whole load of research decided to DIY.

It was high up in the drivers footwell, behind all the vents. Its is a very simple swap but actually getting access to the unit is an absolute bast*^d. Took a day for my back to straighten out afterwards. Satisfaction yes, but if someone said they would do it for £100 I would leg it to the cash point.
