Anyone track a 335?

Just curious on what to look out for. I hear engine cooling is a problem.

i have tracked 335i m sport extensively. there are no heat related mechanical issues. in japan we have decent (low ethanol) hi octane gas, so we don't have hpfp issues either...

only issue i had was the RFTs overheating and getting slippery.

I posted a similar question over at bimmerforums. The answers I got back were a bit of a bummer.

Can any 335 trackers shed some light on this? How bad is the cooling problem?

If you do not have the factory oil cooler, very bad. If you do have the oil cooler, still bad. If you have an upgraded oil cooler like me, the coolant and transmission still freak out.

I bought another car after getting frustrated with the 335i. Search the tracking section, this issue has been discussed at length.

I had no oil cooler with an AT, 75 degrees, limp mode at Infineon often. Factory Oil cooler, 99degrees at Thunderhill, limp mode often. Then 75 again Laguna Seca, slight limp mode, but didn't push it that much, pulled off once. Got a VKwerks larger OC and will go to Infineon this weekend and report. Suppose to be 75 degrees.

I dunno where to start...start by searching for any of my posts..probably 40% of them are about track issues.

I took my car to Spring Mountain Motorsport Ranch last month. The ambient temp was 100 degrees. My car has the OEM oil cooler. I could only put in about 4 really hot laps (really pushed it) before the oil temp reached 280. Then I had to do a cool down lap and pit. I don't know how the car will perform with cooler weather. Hopefully, the weather will be cooler next month at the Auto Club Speedway.

Wait, there are too many track experts here, haha!

Let me chime in as a noob. The upgraded factory oil cooler is FINE for me! So if you're a track noob like me, you'll be ok. Don't worry. I haven't overheated in my first 3 track events, and the 335i is plenty of fun to drive.

Oh crap, here's the spoiler. My HPFP did fail at Laguna this past July. Limp modes all day. Oh well, I guess I don't have a clean experience after all w/ my 335i, hehe. Darn, was trying to make a point that the car is plenty fine for a beginner.

Overheating? Never heard of it! At least we have never seen it with our project 335i.

Never had an issue, however I have a friend who has. Been to the track plenty of times with no real heat issues. My issues come from the rear brakes being used up. 3 sets at 42K, wish I could turn the stability control off!!

Never had limp mode on track, although there was one time I pushed 300F, just short of limp mode. The engine heat coming out of the engine compartment and wheel wells was quite something. So now have the AR extra oil cooler and Helix inter cooler. Also depends on what oil you use.

As long as your car comes with an oil cooler you should be ok. Pushing the snot out of the car on the track in the dead of summer (92F), I have never exceeded 300F.

Track away brother.

Joel, going over 300F will earn you limp mode. Did you really go over 300F?

Closed circuit road course that's longer than 1/4 mile and requires turning the steering wheel
