Another HPFP issue ? In Europe ...

Hi there,

During the last time I got long cranks in the morning ( not every day ), especially when the gas tank is nearly empty. Once the engine had started, no issues at all. Time to go to the dealership ? I'm in Europe, so there can be no ethanol issues. Thank you for your advice.

Eugen

Did you check the error codes?

Check this:

I'm dealing with the same symptoms at the moment...

Checked codes right now, no codes ( Auterra DynoScan 8.0.9 ).

I had the issue around 4 times up to now within 2 months, if I recall correctly most times with a pretty empty tank. Gas is Shell V-Power 100 ROZ. At the first time it didn't start at all, I shut off after 5-7 seconds. The other times I shut off after 3 seconds cranking and the engine started normal at the second attempt. I just want to avoid a not working car when I need it.

Thanks,
Eugen

Could be your HPFP, I have had 4 replacements in the meanwhile,
while using Shell V-Power 95% of the time. (HPFP failures does not always give you errors)

It could also be your plugs / coils, but that would probably give you an error mentioning miss fires. (My SA stated that BMW has a lot of coil issues due to overheating)

But as you state it it's mostly in the morning, it might be more injector related based on the link I posted before.

What you could try (at least it worked for me) is to start the engine, put it in a gear or set it to D in an automatic and hold the break. The engine makes a bit more power then in neutral.

(I have an AT so not sure if it works for a MT) but after a couple of minutes the engine went into limp mode. I cannot always reproduce this, but it worked a couple of times.

I also found out that my dealer in Europe does not follow the SIB's but only PUMA information.
So wavng with a SIB does not always work, also the 10 years extended HPFP warranty does not apply to europe.

Let me know if this helps you a bit.

I had long cranks a couple of times, in fall 2007. They have not come back so far. What I noticed was that it was also in the morning and it was maybe 5 deg. celsius. During the day it was almost 20 deg. celsius. I assume the sharp drop in temperature decreases the fuel pressure in the entire high pressure section and that maybe causes the long cranks, because it takes longer to build up the correct pressure for the injectors to work properly. When the outside temperature is stabilized, lets say its constantly 5deg, then there where no long cranks. In the summer time when it is always warm ~25-30deg. I never had long cranks. I always noticed a slight (1-2sec.) increase of crank time when it gets colder. This is my observation over 3 years.

Interesting. BMW in my country always asks if I use V-Power or not, as in "you are a car abuser if you do not" ;-)

My personal experience are quite positive, but could there be difference between US v-power and EU v-power?

I've had mine fail in Aus. No ethanol in the fuel unless you specifically purchase the E85 that is labeled at the servo's.

It is the HPFP. Had the car at the dealership this morning and will get the new pump on Thursday.

Good to hear they have found the issue! Enjoy your HPFP ;-)

Here in Europe, in general I think Shell is higher rated then BP, but BP is also in the A range.

i think there will be some difference especially as there are differences between the US and EU climate laws...

This is interesting news that they are failing just as much with non ethanol fuel. Germany tends to blame our fuel here in the US for the failures, but clearly it is not the root cause. I have also had a injector misfire codes, but they did not want to let the tech change the injectors without keeping the car for an extended time to observe it i guess.

I can only speak for Germany. There are few (~15) refineries here and believe it or not, all major brands and also the idenpendent gas stations get their gas from the same refinery. Just go there and you will see all the trucks nicley lined up... BP, Shell, Esso... The large corporates have signed a distribution agreement to lower transportation costs.

Some say they are adding color and other extras to improve the quality but the basic gas is the same.

Hope this helps.

Not to be fully OT here. My HPFP is also giving up! Cranks are getting longer.
Checked with the BT tool today and Bingo.

How long is it gonna take to replace the HPFP?

1 day 5 / hours aprox. if they have the HPFP on the shelf.

/OT

I'm pretty sure to be honest that most brands have their own addons to the regulare gas which makes the difference. (Friend of my is labtester at Quweit Oil,they even buy gas from other brands to reverse engineer.)

They're still isolated cases compared to the US.

13517592881 is out since 09/2008. When did you hear there was an update?

There isn't. These instructions have just recently been released (Oct 2009):
http://www.bmwtis.com/tiscode/cgi-bi...sion=151533398

Looks like BMW is diving deeper into this...
