(CNN) -- Eleven people plus a gunman were dead and 31 wounded after the gunman opened fire Thursday on a soldier-processing center at Fort Hood, Texas, officials said.

The gunman was a soldier, and two other soldiers have been detained as suspects, Army Lt. Gen. Bob Cone said.

The slain gunman was identified as Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, 39, a law enforcement source told CNN. Licensed in Virginia, Hasan was a psychiatrist who previously worked at Walter Reed Army Medical Center but more recently was practicing at Darnall Army Medical Center at Fort Hood, according to professional records.

Ten of the other dead also were soldiers, while the remaining one was a civilian police officer who was working as a contractor on the base, Cone said.

Two of the injured were in "very serious" condition, Fort Hood spokesman Christopher Hogue said.

More than one shooter may have been involved, Cone said.

I was at the Sprockets Auto Repair center on the opposite end of post all morning. I headed out at abut 1330. Now that I hear how things went down, I'm suprised as hell that I managed to get out. I didn't know what all the sirens were about until I got back to my hotel room an hour or so later.

^ I was at the food court which is like 2 buildings over when the shots went off but I didn't hear them. So I went on to class and then it was nothing but sirens and helicopters outside for the next few hours

I would, but can't. Gotta get back to Riley tomorrow. Good luck, hope nobody close to you was involved.

Sad but true. When I heard the name, I was like omfg, not again, and thankfully there were no religious ties/affiliations to this, but seriously WTF!

A Major doing this?? Damn, sending prayers for the deceased and fast recovery for those injured.

God Bless.

Yes it does. The grenade incident in 2003. The shootings at the recruiting station in arkansas. Now this. Wish it weren't the case however.

This is so disturbing. A 39 year old psychiatrist who just got promoted to major? That sounds like someone who should be very stable. How could this kind of instability have possibly been overlooked?

It probably wasn't its just that the Army is a big beaurocratic machine. It takes a long time and is rather hard to get kicked out for malingering/being a shitbag/et al. Especially if you're in a field that is in critical shortage like medical care profecssionals.

sometimes the most unstable people also learn to hide it the best. look at many serial killers. a lot of them were just regular members of their communities with sick, twisted heads.
