Full hood clear bra...bad idea?

Hey everyone.

For those who have had experience with clear bras, is there a reason why I shouldn't do a full hood clear bra...besides the extra expense? Recently, I've visited a well known establishment that does a lot of high end cars. I 've seen a couple of Lambos, few Porsches, and an Aston Martin with full hood clear bras.

Does anyone here think that that would pose a problem? Heat issues? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I have an appointment to do my SBM this Tuesday...and can't decide. Thanks.

No matter what people tell you, you'll always notice the seam on clear bras. Especially when it's been on the car for a year or so.

Cost... you already answered your own question. Most chips are at the front of the hood anyway.

I have the clear bra. I can see the seam slightly but it's no biggy. I think it looks kind of cool to have. My question is, when I wax the car do I also wax over the bra or just around it? I'm not sure how to clean it.

Also, say after five or six years and it's nicked up a bit, can you remove the bra from the car with no damage to the paint or is on there forever?

Just wax right over the clearbra. If installed correctly and over original paint, then you can peel it right off without damage. You'll have to get the car detailed to get the two surface finishes to blend - the area under the clearbra will fade just like the rest of the paint but will stay shiny, while the rest of the paint will weather.

Other that the fact that it is next to impossible to find a sheet of product large enough to cover an entire hood, there is no reason not to do it.

Thanks for the replies and insights. I was on the M3 forum, and someone posed the same question. It seemed like many of the M3 owners were in favor of the full hood clear bra.

As for cleaning, I've heard this product works really well. A little on the $$$ side, but worth it to keep the clear bra from discoloring. Check it out here:

Yeah if you can find a full hood clear bra and someone who can install it, it should really look sweet on your car.

Thanks for the link for the bra cleaning agent. It's ironic you need a product to protect the bra that's protecting your paint.

Besides waxing, you can also use Plexus Plastic Cleaner on the bra. It will keep it from yellowing although most installers with give you a lifetime warranty against any discoloration.

I have full hood, full bumper (as best they could cover it - M-tech is hard to wrap), full fenders and I'm kicking myself in the A$$ for not getting full rear bumper cause some douche bumped me in traffic a week ago.

My advice to you is get it! Yes you can notice it, if you look for it, but I rather see the clearbra then see rock chips and scratches!

That su*%s!

But thanks for the reply. I have decided to go full hood as well. I personally don't like seeing the line on the good. I don't know if I would've done full hood with AW color, b/c the yellowing effect is definitely more noticeable on this color (from personal experience). I honestly don't care if you can tell that it's there. As you stated, I prefer that any day over paint/rock chips/scratches/swirl marks etc...

The clear bra can get scratched too with improper cleaning...but in the end, I'd rather remove the clear bra then have to repaint the bumper/hood. The value of a car goes down quite a bit (IMO) when the potential buyer knows that the car has been repainted...for whatever reason.

I would do the rear bumper and headlights too.
The clearbra has already saved me more than once on the highway.

I thought it was overkill too till about a week ago when someone bumped my car. They said their GPS fell and their foot slipped off the brake while they reached to pick it up. Luckily they told the cop that and it's on the police report.

Also, if you tend to do a lot of parallel parking then you should really get it.

I hear ya. Luckily, I live in a city/county where we don't have to do much parallel parking at all. If I was in San Francisco, heck yeah.

How will having a bra on the rear bumper protect it from scrapes and dings caused by impact with another hard object? Your bumper still gets damaged whether it's covered or not. I don't see how a clear bra would have helped you here.

I say go for the full length of the hood as well...you're already paying $$ to clear bra the front part, why not go all the way, yah? In fact, I would have chips/scrapes on the upper part of my hood now had I only gotten the forward 6 inches of my hood clearbra-ed.

It's some protection. I have 3 small scratches and a tiny paint chip from getting bumped. If I had clearbra'ed my rear bumper I'd prolly have no damage to the paint.
