So I bought a 335i. Now what?

I just traded in a 750Li to have some fun. Already had a run-in with an AMG something or other. Anyway, I'm seriously considering doing either the Dinan Stage 1 or 2 - I'll be doing research on both. In any event, I have a feeling a bunch of people come here after buying a 335i and ask, "Where do I begin" concerning performance modifications. Is there somewhere you generally point these people?

The car is fast as it is - but I wouldn't mind having more power. The Stage 1 is probably enough - but the Stage 2 offers much more torque. Do I really need it? What I'm REALLY curious about is 0-60 and 1/4 mile times for stock 335i's with the Stage 1 and Stage 2 kits.

It appears that the Stage 2 is actually MUCH more expensive considering you need an oil cooler:

Then again, maybe I already HAVE a factory oil cooler. How do I tell? VIN?

It also appears that these kits are dyno tested with a free-flowing exhaust. Does that mean NO exhaust at all? Or the one Dinan sells?

Lots of questions... If anyone would like to point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks in advance...

Using the search button helps, but I'll help anyway. If your car is manual or has SP u have an oil cooler and u can get stage 2. I think you'll find a JB3 or Procede to be a better investment than dinan. More power, more user adjustability and can be sold after to recoup some of the money spent. Plus I find a little too much boost taper at high rpms with the dinan. And yes dinans dyno was with their exhaust. 2gs for two mufflers is a rip off though. Buy a catback exhaust.

Go with either the JB3 or Proceed.

Thank you. Okay.. I'll look into the JB3 and Proceed.. After a little reading, I thought some people came to the conclusion that after awhile, the car re-learned it's old ways and the performance became less impressive over time. That's not the case?

Also.. What is "SP"? Sport Package? If so, my salesman did tell me it had this package - but how do I tell for sure? I'm guessing via VIN.. Let me know..

Thanks again...

I also agree with Mie.

I wouldn't go for the Dinan unless you are unaware of your other options... and your not.
JB3 or Procede IMO.

To address you question about the oil cooler, check out this post by jopa489:

In regards to knowing whether or not you have the sports package, one of the ways to tell are the seats.
The sport seats kind of 'hug' you more and they have a pull-out leg/thigh rest.

Here's a pic of the sports seats for reference:

Thank you. I don't have the "grate" and I don't have 19" wheels - so I don't have an oil cooler. So that probably leaves Dinan Stage 2 out of the picture for me. I do have the sports package as I have the seats you described.

My only concern about going with an option other than Dinan is warranty issues. I don't want something that I have to uninstall before I bring the car in for service. I don't have time for anything like that. I run a business that keeps me very busy and whatever spare time I have left goes to the gym and my wife. With that in mind, does a Dinan stage one kit make more sense?

Also.. Is the JB3 or Proceed even a good idea without any oil cooler at all? I get the feeling I should have one no matter how you look at it..

I understand where you're coming from. Yes, you will have to uninstall for dealer visits, but its honestly not as bad as it sounds. Once you've done it once or twice, it's really not a big deal.
The price to performance ratio on the Dinan just doesn't make it worth it in my opinion, but you do get the convenience and peace of mind you're seeking.

From my understanding, an oil cooler is not an absolute necessity unless you plan on tracking the car or have very high performance goals for the car. I personally don't fit into either category, but I do have an oil cooler.
For a daily driver, I think you will be fine... Maybe someone else can chime in on this.

Another option you could look into is the JB+. I have no experience with it personally, but the install/uninstall process is much easier from what I've heard and read.

Here are the install guides, I suggest you at least take a look through them before you make a final decision:
- JB+
- JB3
- Procede Video
(Unfortunately, I couldn't find an install guide for the procede in .pdf format but the install is almost identical to the JB3 IIRC.)

That JB Plus installation does look very easy... I'll be very tempted to go that route because it looks very easy to install and uninstall. I'm probably still learning toward the Dinan worry-free setup, however.. I'll have to think about all of this..

In the end, all I'm looking for is a little extra power. I don't want some lightly modded Lexus IS350 showing me it's tail lights. They're close to our 335i's in straight-line acceleration when they've got a good driver behind the wheel. Plenty of people are doing 0-60 runs in the 4.7-4.9 range stock. So all I'm looking for is a strong edge over the IS and run of the mill modded Infiniti G35/37s.. 40 extra horsepower and torque is probably all I need...

When you opt for the JB+ we give you a 6-month trade up window so if you decide to trade-up towards the JB3 you get full credit for your JB+ put towards the JB3 (In essence you get a full refund on the JB+)

The install on the JB+ is a 5-10min job the first time and then less then a minute.

Thanks, Mike. Can you explain why it's only a one minute uninstall/re-install after the initial installation?

Because you know how to do it Whenever doing something for the first time it always takes much longer as most people are very slow and careful, and once you get a feel for it you can breeze through it.

Remember how long it took you to tie your shoes for the first time LOL
