Hi,
My car got vandalized twice in the same area in the past 3 weeks. (UT Austin Campus). Someone Walked On Car: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...ighlight=skimo Broke Windows and Stole: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...ghlight=kareem I will probably have to visit and park at this area for time to come. I need to invest in a solution to prevent this. I tried parking in paid/monitored garages and that still didnt help. Any advice on cost effective alarm that works? I did a bunch of online research. However, as I have NEVER owned an alarm before, was hoping for some feedback from people with advice. - proximity sensor? - 2 way alert to my remote control? - flash bang grenade trap? ..etc budget: $400 including installation. Rant: If I were not bounded by law, I would have built my own contraption that launches a pepper spray attack or even electrocutes the body if the windows get smashed. I am ranting right now as I have been in and out of body shops, driving with broken windows in the rain and dealing with rental car issues. ![]() Thanks! Skimo |

I would by the alarm and either do it yourself (search threads for instructions) or go to a dealer and have them do it. You will be looking at between $400-$600 dollar range. I have the BMW alarm on my car and absolutely LOVE IT!!! I don't car what anyone says, that large flashing clown nose is a theft deterrent and the alarm will alert people when set off, which is the goal. Never had it go off yet, so it isn't one of those that are too-sensitive. It has a motion sensor on the inside and can also detect moving of the car (ex: if someone jacked up your car to take your wheels) among other things. Someone breaking a window, or jumping on your car would definitely set it off and alert those around. I would go this route--it will do more good than having nothing ![]() |

wow that is shitty man..you got to switch a better place..looks like someone already had eyes on your baby.Maybe next time it will not be just broken into.. probably drive away ...while i know the BMW oem alarm could not help you that much..because it did not came with shock sensors at all..i was thinking a DEI alarm like viper . One of my friend got a alarm on his 370z called zenesis seems pretty good..but you might need to look into the install since not all alarm can bypass BMW oem control. gl

Yea I've heard bad things about getting aftermarkets alarms just b/c of the amount of electronics already in a BMW. I think the BMW alarm is like $3xx plus installation, Maybe save an extra hundy or two and go for it.
I live in the DC area, and although its nice for the most part, you just never know with some of the people around here. I don't have one yet but I plan on getting it installed soon. |

If you go with the BMW alarm check bavarianautosport.com, they had the best price when I bought mine. With the holidays you may be able to save some $$$. There is also a DIY install if you are inclined to do so. They you will still have to activate it with the dealer.

I agree with Takashi. Alarms really won't do much in your case. If a thief sees something in your car that can be taken easily in a "smash-n-grab", an alarm won't do much good.
The best you can do is be careful where you park, and don't leave anything that looks remotely valuable in the car, or stow it in the trunk/out of sight. and be sure to wipe off the suction cup marks from your windshield if you have a gps or radar detector. |

Truth is, there is nothing you can do about vandalization other than catch them in the act, a.k.a "seeing them do it" so you're going to have to invest in a tiny hidden dash cam, or buy a beater to drive to school and leave the car at home.
It sucks to have to think about the latter of the two, but the way things are going for you as of late, you will save money in the long run by getting a second (cheap) ride, opposed to paying for damages. Just my opinion. |

You can do that in one of two ways, steak out your own car and miss classes until you catch the fu@kers, or get a cam and hope for the best. If you have them on tape, then you at least have something to go on...if you DONT have them on tape, well you know the answer. Ill take dashboard cam for $5oo Alex.... |

To be honest, an in car security camera system is what I would consider if I had this kind of problem. At least you get the chance to record the person's face. If it's on campus, there is a good chance for the person to be found.
