BMW iPod kit that *will* charge my iPhone 3G?

I have an '09 335xi that came with the BMW iPod kit with the Y-cable that plugs into a USB port and AUX port in my armrest.

I'm able to access my iPhone 3G (latest OS, latest firmware, etc.) through iDrive, and I get the "powered" licon on the iPhone in the upper-right, but I cannot get it to charge.

It seems people are having some luck getting this to work. I know Apple did change how the new iPhones get charged.

Has BMW made a new Y-cable that I could pick up from my dealer to fix this?

Officially, it is not supposed to charge them. But my Ipod adapter has before. So who knows?

I have that option in my '08 coupe and it does charge my iPhone 3G. I thought it wasn't supposed to either but it does. Are you positive yours is not charging?

When I hook up my iPhone 3G to the cable and the battery is half full, I get the "Charged" icon in the upper-right, not the "Charging" icon. I've also driven around for a while to confirm that it is in fact not charging.

Compare this to my computer when I connect my iPhone 3G and the battery is half full, I immediately get the "Charging" icon.

Could it just be a bad cable, bad USB port in the center console? I'm still able to access music on the phone through iDrive.

mine doesn't charge either.. its quite annoying. if i'm low on battery i can charge it with my separate iphone charger but then i can't listen to music, i have to go the old fashioned way with the charger on the bottom and the audio cable on top. ridiculous if you have ipod conectivity

Now you guys are making me wonder if my phone is really charging. When I plug it in to the car I do get the charging symbol on the phone but I'm not sure if I ever really tested it to see if it is in fact charging. I'll do just that the next time I have a long-enough drive...

There's also a revised P/N for replacement docking cables for those using the OTC BMW iPod kit (not 6FL), these are a bit pricey at $54 from your dealer.

Scoche has an adapter called the passport that will convert the old +12V firewire charging to +5V that is required by the current iPod/iPhone standards.

The 812 part # has the same charging voltage as whatever cable came with your car. The 812 will not charge a 3G or 3Gs. However for those of you that have an accessory ipod kit in your car there are updated cables to change the charging voltage from 12v to 5v.

I'm out buying one now. My only concern is that it doesn't list the 3GS on the compatible list. Guess I'll find out soon enough.

Doesn't work exactly the way I expected it to, but it does seem to be working.

I'll have a report after a few days of use.

The Scoche Passport will not work with 2009 E90 (LCI) iDrive. Confirmed directly from the manufacturer.

Shouldn't have anything to do with the system as it's simply moving 12V power to 5V power using different pins in the ipod connector.

Others have reported success.

My OEM adapter will sometimes charge, but isn't an automatic thing.

Hit & miss deal

I just bought the little gadget that you plug in between the phone and the Adaptor. Converts the voltage. Got it on ebay for 20 bucks. Problem solved.

Yeah that cable jive did no good for me. Also when the phone is completely dead i get no charge from the cable. Official iPhone cable works fine (but slow charging).

Freaking annoying.

Just talked with a SA about this. Apparently, the 2010's already do the conversion, so any adapters that you buy aren't going to work *if* you have a '10. If anyone wants to buy my Scosche passPort for their 09 and earlier that's having problems charging, I'll sell it to you for what I paid for it ($30).

He also stated that BMW is working on a software resolution for this, which kind of makes sense. If it were a hardware issue, it would either work or not work, not work intermittently. Because software can be finicky, the 70/30 (not work/work) ratio we're getting makes sense.

This guy has the perfect suggestion. Makes for some messy wiring, but several people have posted it works:
