Garage List
A non-used tire's life

I have what may seems like a silly question. But what the heck!

I have a set of the OEM potenza run-flat tires sitting in my garage since September of 2007. The tires only have about 8,000 miles on them. They are my back up tires. Is there any time limit on storing them or can I store them indefinitely without affecting their usability? Thanks!

Over time the rubber will get brittle but I dont think 2 years is too much. Also, read around about long term storage of tires. There are correct and incorrect ways of storing them.

The general rule of thumb is that tires are considered aged when they are older than 6 years. The actual production date is stamped on the sidewall.

Tirerack has some tips on properly storing tires to prevent dry rot.

Whats the date code on the tires? There are guides out there that state how long tires can be kept for, as long as they are stored in a "cool dry place".

2 years is fine as long as they were stored cool, dry, and not in direct light. A tire can not be legally sold 7 years or older.
