335i - COMPLETE Oil Change ???

Hi,

A newby's 1st Post.

Probably one for Tony, or any 335i owner come to that!

As a 335i has "external" oil capacity, i.e. Oil Cooler + Pipes & Turbo Cooling System, presumably the oil contained in these doesn't get drained, during an oil change ??

I realise that the quantity may be small, but any "dirty" oil left in the system, must "contaminate" the new oil ???

Obviously would be loads of work to drain the cooler etc.

I have seen comments about oil being "sucked out" by dealers ??

Any comments, theories, welcome.

I wouldnt worry about that, if you are really concerned why not either put a flushing cycle through it or just run some fresh cheap oil of the correct grade though whilst stationary and then oil change again ?

Welcome!

The amount of oil remaining within oil galleries, pumps, heat exchangers etc when the sump plug is removed is minimal; these areas cannot drain.

I'm not a fan of using suction to remove oil from the sump via the dipstick tube. This often happens these days as complex acoustic undertrays often cover the bottom of the engine etc and can be time-consuming to remove to gain access to the drain plug. Draining the oil in this fashion (IMO) is not as complete as a full drain via the plug. Call me old school!!!

Fortunately, access to the sump plug on the 335i is as easy as falling off a log.

Drop down flap in the undertray helpfully provided by BMW.

That's good - aslong as the workshop has a spare ramp, otherwise it might be sucked out regardless!

Yves
Yves,

Thanks for reply, could get expensive and time consuming, if done by stealer or independant to maintain warranty, will just have to get these old bones under the car and do it myself.

Hi,

Thanks for response, I am definately of the "Old School" as well, at least with only an "electronic" dipstick, there is no dipstick tube for them to use to suck it out.

What bothers me with most workshops running bonus schemes and "fast lane" oil changes, the "technician" will be putting the drain plug back in long before it stops dripping !

Seriously, do it yourself. Very easy and you will know it has been done properly.

This engine should be having its oil changed more regularly than the service indicator anyway, I do mine every 6 months regardless.

Yves
Yves,

Sorry, didn't give all the relevent info.

Car has only done 5K, will be it's first oil change, not needed yet, as far as BMW are concerned, just me being "old school" and wanting to change it early, to get rid of any running-in debris etc, and to change to Mobil 1. Not a Castrol fan (seen the inside of too many low mileage engines run on Castrol )

Strange that BMW used to say Mobil was the approved oil, until Castrol became a major sponsor of the BMW F1 Team, now you should use Castrol !!!!!!

I need a stamp for service history and warranty, or would definately do it myself.

Original question was intended to be "model specific" being turbo and the associated problems being experienced with these, the last thing you need is foreign matter etc in the system, just wanted to know if anyone bothered to fully drain the system, cooler etc. As I would normally do on a car when not having my hands tied behind my back by warranty conditions.

Best wishes.

You dont need a stamp. Its not at Bmw required service. Just keep the receipt and add it to the rest of the paperwork and receipts you have.

My concerns exactly! I reckon most of these fast-track lube services are "oil sucked out" jobs.
