I usually count about 1 psi/sec. on my car, but it will vary depending on your tire size. A good rule of thumb is to keep a pressure gauge in your car.

The coin operated machines usually have gauges, but the gas stations that offer free air typically do not. Most of the ones I've seen look like this:

Its different from pump to pump... as DV said, keep a gauge in your car. The gauges on the tire pumps are mostly inaccurate.

^^ Its a matter of personal preference, for me at least! To start with, you can follow the OEM recommendations and adjust from there.

I wouldn't trust the "gauge" on the pump either. Most are so inconsistent after being ran over by trucks and what not

The "stocking stuffer" ones at most auto stores cost, what, $1.99? Get one, best 2 bucks you'll spend on your car (as long as you use it)

Best regards,
Wede

There are so many variables that can affect this...

it is not safe to 'guess' at this. Use an air pressure gauge.

I usually count when filling the tire up with air, about 1 second per psi of air. HOWEVER, this is only an inaccurate "gauge" that gets me relatively close to the air pressure I want. You HAVE to use a gauge to get the correct pressure. Depending on the air pump, nozzle, tire, and wheel psi per second can vary by a LARGE range.

I bought a $5 one at AutoZone. Every 1st of the month I check my tire pressure.
