Are you talking about going as an officer or as enlisted?

There is no full time position per say as a boarding officer. It is an additional duty you may get in addition to your regular duties in the rate you chose. They recently ended the Port Security Specialist rating and started up the Maritime Enforcement (ME) rating but the duties will be essentially the same. The only difference is the ME rate will be available to active duty as well as reserve.

A lot will come down to the rate you chose and where you do your drills. The forum website linked below is probably the best place you can look for info and ask questions. I have been out of the active duty side of the Guard for a couple years and work on the civilian side so I am not up to speed on all the latest changes.

Depending on what you are looking to do you may want to look at the jobs available on the civilian side. Many of the shore side jobs the active duty guys do are coming open to the civilian side including intelligence specialists, investigators, inspectors, search and rescue specialists and many others. Below is the website with current civilian Coast Guard openings. It is updated daily and unlike the other military services that advertise open ended job announcements that many not actually be currently available the jobs posted by the Coast Guard are actual jobs they are currently hiring for.

Thanks for replying. Yes that is exactly what I want to do, ME. I just want to experience the whole military environment and stay in Cali at the same time. The whole ME job looks exciting. I'm currently doing the whole law enforcement thing, but would love to experience how it is is to work on waters and ports.

If you do go reserve ME you may stand a good chance of being activated and sent somewhere else around the country in support of Coast Guard operations. About 2/3rd's of the uniformed Coast Guard where I work are activated reservists. The activation time is a year but those that like it chose to extend longer. Dedicated port security units also get activated to serve in Saudi Arabia/Iraq and also Guantanamo Bay. Ask a lot of questions and try to find out what unit you would be drilling with.

I heard that they weren't actively seeking recruits at this point.
