Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D - decrease mpg?
225/45R17 Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D Blackwall
17X8 Rial Salerno Silver Painted 35psi front/ 36 psi rear I have installed the above winter configuration and my mpg has dropped drastically, i am averaging about 10mpg (mix between city and highway driving but mainly city). I have averaged 15-18mpg on the OEM summer tires. Is this normal to drop so drastically? I installed these myself, could I have installed the tires wrong? any help would be greatly appreciated. =) thanks.

10MPG is pretty drastic, even with xdrive and all city driving. That's V10 M5 mileage.
Winter tires tend to run 'heavy' and usually you will lose some mileage, but not what you're talking about. Try a fresh tank of gas and see what happens. |

You will also lose some mileage as a result of the cold weather in general, due to the denser air.

thanks... would cold weather give 10mpg? i still think thats pretty drastic, but can't figure out what could be wrong. the car is driving fine otherwise. i was just worried, i may have installed my tires wrong.

Nothing you could have done with those wheels and tires would result in a 30%+ drop in fuel economy. Driving on snow or slush covered roads does cause much greater rolling resistance, regardless of tire type. Perhaps that was a factor?

thanks gary. nope. no more snow here. its cold, (like 23°) but no snow... oh well, my concern was putting the tires on wrong since this was my first time changing tires on a car, but if your saying this has nothing to do with that...i can live with the lower mpg. thx

Wow I have the same tires and average about 17-19mpg in the snow? Are your tires backwards??

how do i check if its on backwards? I installed them with the rotation -> pointing to the front of the car. Is that correct? what do you keep your tire pressure at?

To assess fuel efficiency you need constant conditions. I use 75 mph cruise control on the same stretch of highway. Summer tires mpg = 31.2; Winter tires mpg = 29.8. So there is a difference for me.

I would think the only way pressure would have that much of an effect would be if it was drastically low.

The first thing I notice during winter is the BLACK soot in my exhaust tips. My mechanic friend advised that's because during winter, the car simply runs richer and doesn't get the chance to warm up. I'm averaging 17 mpg during winter months. Pump up the air pressure to maximum recommendation and accept the decrease in winter mpg. No biggie.

Directional tires installed backwards would not affect MPG much at all.

I'm running the same tires as the OP on different rims. I did NOT notice a decrease in MPG at all. Somethings definately wrong to get that low. Maybe you are using more gas pedal than normal?
BTW i'm using the same tire pressures as well.

Maybe fill up your tank with fresh gas, reset your trip computer and report back.

I don't think its the tires, sounds more like a mechanical issue like your brakes are sticking or your fuel system? Might be time to take it in if the trip reset and new fuel dont do the trick. GL
