Hi guys,
As i have moved from a M3 to a 335D SE, i just can not get use to the feel of the standard steering wheel. Has anyone replaced their steering wheel from a SE to M3 or M Sport, How easy is this to do and do i need everything from New Airbag and cover etc... OR Has anyone wrapped their steering wheel to make it thicker and feel like the M3 wheel. Where can i get this gone... Thanks for all your help! |

All you need to do is buy an MSport wheel rim with the paddle cutouts, and use your existing airbag. You can reuse the existing paddles. It takes about 20 minutes to do the job and that'll give you back the thicker wheel.
Alternatively you can buy a BMW Performance wheel, either with the electronic gadgets, or without. Around £500 + VAT for the electronic one, about £380 + VAT for the non-electronic. Again, the airbag transplants over, as do the paddles. Both Performance wheels are of similar thickness to the MSport wheel, but are wrapped in Alcantara. Alternatively, you can go to somewhere like B-Trim in North London and ask them to rewrap your existing wheel in an alternative leather or alcantara, and they will be able to thicken up the wheel as well by adding more padding. To retrim a steering wheel I think will be about £250 or so.

Hi thanks,
i think will give b trim a call as their web site looks good and they are not too far away. I as do not currently have a sport model i have read other posts stating that new buttons and airbag will be needed as the SE one is different to M Sport or M3. Is this correct? |

On the 335d you have the 'sport' version of the wheel so don't need a new airbag at all.

i.e. can I buy a M Sport wheel with flappy paddle cut outs, but without airbag, and simply swap over my SE airbag, paddles, and buttons? I've searched threads, but the variety of options confuses me - one too many mince pies, perhaps? Also, as a DIY numpty, would a BMW specialist do the work for me, or is it truly a job even a DIY dunce can attempt? Mike. |

Ahh with must disappointment... The M3 wheel is not a straight swap for te 335 wheel...
Whilst the airbag unit and all the buttons can be switched over the paddles cannot be switched over!! I now have to wait two weeks and the guy is going to order me a Standard Sport Wheel with the M3 Trimmig and Stiching!! Best thing is i now get this done for £120 instead of £160!! |

I would be interested in doing this too, I had a M Sport Touring and changed to a 335D SE Coupe. The thinner wheel def does not feel so nice.
Is the wheel with paddles different from one that doesn't have paddles. Any links to any for sale is appreciated. Is it an easy job to swap over or is it a dealer job ? |

Hi Davyk31
wheel swap take around 20-30 mins depending on if you know what your doing, i'm sure you will be able to get instruction on this forum somewhere. I will post some pictures up and if you are interested then i will forward the details of the guy to you. I have not yet got my wheel fitted so i am holding back untill i see what i like and then everyone is welcome!! Keep watching this space!! |
