Actual Cost to Lease a 335i
Hey Guys,
I recently had a Chevy Traverse rental car and actually really enjoyed it. That got me looking into doing a short lease on one (24mo) but it comes out around $450 a month... With this truck, I'd keep my Subaru WRX but if I were to get a 335i, I would sell the WRX. What are some average lease prices that people are actually getting on 335i/xi sedans? I saw an offer on BMW.com for $439 a month, but I don't people actually get deals that good. Any and all feedback and input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mike |

Read the fine print on the BMWNA deals. Most have high down payments (around $4500 due at signing) and few options (ZPP and Steptronic) to achieve that $439/mo price. Check out the New/Preowned pricing subforum - you may be able to get a better idea by reading some threads there.
The price of a lease depends on mileage, options on the car, negotiated price, residual value, and money factor. Not sure if you're new to leasing or have experience with it in the past (and don't mean to insult your intelligence) but the more you know about the leasing process, the better deal you'll get. ![]()

That $439/mo is also with the holiday cash incentive of $2500 which ends Monday.

yeah
and is achieved with additional money down on top of that. look over at leasetrader.com to see what real people wound up paying. Just paying aquisition, maco, training, first payment, tag, security deposit and title down (the minimum), you'd be hard pressed to get even a 'no-options' 335i for less than $700/mo. 3y/36K. Am I wrong, anyone?

When negotiating a lease, think of it as a purchase. Negotiate total price of car, as the lease is calculated from that amount. Never ever negotiate actual payment. The better price you get for car, the better your payment will look, and you would have to put less money down. ALL MSRP are negotiable! You could get the total price of car reduced by as much as $5k, which would translate to a reduced monthly payment... Refer to www.truecar.com to do your homework before going to dealer.
Remember, dealer is there to make money off you. His commision is probably anywhere around 25% to 35% OFF THE PROFIT!!! So it's in his best interest to sell you a car at higher price. If he sells you a car $1k over "DEALERS INVOICE" , he'd be getting $250 to $350 commision, and that's very good for a couple of hours of work writing up a deal with you. He will always try to sell you a car $5k over his invoice, which is MSRP... but will be glad to get $500 over invoice too. BMW cars sell very well... I know a Sales Advisor at BMW, he sells 30-40 cars a month. I wouldn't recommend anyone to go to that SA, he is fierce and has no mercy. He doesn't worry about "losing a sale", he gets plenty of sales. For commision off $500 he would't even move his fat ass in chair to pick up the phone to call the bank to get your lease approved. But other dealers will be happy to get even that.

1) I put about 22k down 2) I paid it off 2 years early My point is 12k sounds like a lot, but it isn't in the big picture. It may mean waiting a year to build the downpayment. Contrary to what many believe, ownership = more flexibility. |

The way I do it is I calculate a lease car if i was to get it invoice. I then Take the current lease numbers MF/depreciation and crunch the numbers and see what the lowest possible lease price is. I then Add 500 to invoice and do it over and the 750 and do it and then 1000 and do it. This gives me a range and I know the facts and numbers before entering the arena. Unless you know the facts they will walk all over you and you'll actually think you got a good deal.
I also figure $1800 due at signing. This final number depends on your states tag and registration fees.

I don't want to start the lease vs. buy argument again, but the "left with nothing" statement is a bit misleading. It seems like that because you don't own the car, but if you'd bought the car new, then your cost of depreciation would be approximately equal the cost of the lease over the same timeframe. You're still left with "nothing" in the sense that the financial position of the person who bought new is almost identical to the person who leased new.
A $50k car with a 50% residual after three years would cost you $25k plus financing charges on a lease. Buying it would cost you $50k plus financing charges, but the car would be worth the same $25k after three years. In both cases you're out the same $25k for three years' worth of driving. If you'd bought the car, of course the cost of ownership goes down over time, particularly once you don't have a car payment, but then you could just have bought a two- or three-year-old car to begin with. If the car is actually worth more than $25k at the end of the lease, then you can simply sell it and pocket the difference between the proceeds and the buyout. In the US you have the further benefit (unlike us Canadians) of being able to negotiate the buyout price on a lease, which could easily offset the additional expense of leasing then buying out vs. straight buying. As you suggest, it doesn't make financial sense to buy new cars any more than it does to lease them. Sure, there are subsidized finance rates vs. what a bank would charge you for a car loan for a used car, but many people could simply use a very low interest HELOC to finance the purchase. Or they could buy a CPO car and still get subsidized finance rates. Quote:

Best quote I got on a 2010 335Xi that had an MSRP of $50K was 36month, 15k miles/yeah, $2000 down, $765/month...
ended up getting a $49K C300 4matic with same term and miles for zero down and $619/month... Right now I feel like BMWs are not leasing well because they got bit in the ass a few years ago HARD...like the same time several car companies stopped leasing all together.

Back in Jan of 09.
I was looking to lease the car I financed now. 09 335i coupe MT Sport It was $575/month. It had about $8000 downpayment with about 4000 being refundable security deposits at the end of the lease. Total OTD price was 42,500 approx. It really just depends on the "money factor" on the certain car at the time. Back when I was looking it was pretty high. Especially compared to a regular 328 or a sedan. |

I paid $1,594.00 at signing and am paying $599.00 a month. I got a pretty good deal I think, and it means over 3 years I will pay a total of $23,158.00. You also have to figure out the extra cost in gas (reg vs. premium), insurance, tires, any extra oil changes, etc.
