Hi, I'm picking up my 335i later this week but the snow is rotten in Scotland just now so I want to be prepared.

What is the rear tyre size on the 18" wheels? (It's an 08 M-sport E90) Want to pick up some snow socks.

Also, incase the weather is persistant, what winter tyres are people using? And what was the cost?

You're likely to have 255 wide rears.

I've just picked up a set of Vredestein Wintrac Xtreme tyres for about £570 (plus fitting) to put onto a set of 18's. These were 225/40 front and 245/40 rear.

Feel a bit strange compared to the normal lower profile tyres in the corners, as there's a bit more roll, but other than that they seem to be pretty good. haven't had the chance to test them in any snow yet.

Like most tyres you probibly need to put a good few miles on them to get through the top layer, so imagine they give more grip in time. I have heard that the bigger profiles on 17" add more bounce to the ride so that's expected. I'm just not sure what width rear tyres to get, so I have started a thread to try and get some advice.

I guess the 255 will give more grip in the wet/cold but less on Snow. Not sure though, the smaller widths are cheaper.

I've just joined the forum but have been watching it for a few months now.

Here's me, first time in 16 years without a 4-wheel drive and we get weather like this!

Anyway, I'm on the look out for some winter tyres and steel wheels and have ordered some 16" BMW steel wheels from e-bay and Nokian tyres (from mytyres.co.uk) to fit. The local BM dealer isn't sure they'll fit (16" wheels only recommended up to 325 model) but it's worth a try. If not, I'll need to return the tyres and get 17" alloys (aftermarket) and tyres.
I originally bought a couple of sets of Autosox as a guarentee for not getting stuck (if you have them, you'll never need them), but when the missus got stuck they wouldn't fit on the wheels beacause:
1/ It's vitually impossible to hook them over the wheel with the small gap between the wheel arch and tyre on the m sport (I tried myself as I didn't believe her).
2/ Although the website for the autosox supplier in the UK lists item '665' as fitting 255/35R18 wheels (as well as fitting 225/45R18) the manufactureres website says there are none suitable for the wider wheels and they are not listed on the back of the pack either.
Fitting may be easier on a standard car but I would have second thoughts about buying them again. At the moment I have two carpet tiles stuck in the boot with ropes attached so they can be tied to the towing hook and once moving will be dragged along until out of the deep stuff.
Anyway, I hope my experiences so far have helped.

I don't think 16" wheels will fit over the brakes on the 330d - I'm not 99% sure, but I'm almost there...!

You were right, the 16" steel wheel doesn't quite clear the brake caliper (by a few millimeters only).
Never mind, I already have a set of 17" replica alloys on order which I have been told will fit, just in time for the snow to vanish here.
