bmw engine choices
interesting, reading the press from the detroit show reveals that the 1 series is getting the n55 engine.
meaning the 1 and 5 series (gt, not sure about regular 5) get the n55 the 3 and z4 series get the n54 and the uprated n54 in the "is" models the n55 is a single twin-scroll turbo, the n54 soldiers on with two turbos.

the new F10 5 series will get the N55 single turbo. So wil the nes 3 series when it comes out. I've heard that the next M3 will use a revised version of the n54 engine - with more boost.
And don;t forget the diesel verson of the N54 found int he 335d anx X5d. That is a fantastic engine and would be my second choice for a new car. First choice if I drove lots of highway miles...I mean kilometers. |

interestingly enough, the 740i gets the n54, not n55.
135i: n55 335i and 335is (e92 not sure about e90): n54 535i (f10): n55 740i: n54 z4 and z4 is: n54 *editted because of typo

The N54 in "is" models will have more power and torque than the first versions of N55 and N54.

isnt the 2011 3 series getting the n55, and the n54 only staying with the "is" model?

^^ I believe that's correct. My 2011 335xi will be a N55 motor.

I think twin-turbo is better than single-turbo,, at least there are two turboes inside the engine. However, I have a higher expectation on 335is because its shape is so cool, it looks like LCI E90 performance section

The sportiest BMW's, including the flagship model, all get the N54. The rest get the N55, which is probably more oriented toward "efficiency" and "fuel economy"..
Conclusion: N54 >> N55. |
