How Accurate are BMW speedos

If you were driving towards a speed camera van with 98 mph indicated on the speedo what would be the real speed??

As you can tell I am a little concerned.

Thanks

94/95 MPH, of the ones I've checked against various Tomtoms, they have all been + 2 MPH at 80 MPH, I suppose tyre wear will make a small difference, but I'd say you will certainly be under a ton

What Del says mate. Those camera vans can see a long distance. Where you travelling over a ton then saw it and slowed down?

They might not have even been operating it, did you see the operator behind the camera?

Hey Jon - where you been pal?

When I got done on the M6-toll doing 99mph, my cruise control, and therefore my speedo on my (BMW) M6 was set to 100mph exactly. Pretty precise actually.

Were you on a motorway? If you were caught it'll only be a fixed penalty - that's what I got for 99mph anyway.

It's not like you to drive at speeds like that - surely your car was burning too much diesel?

Thanks, I was hoping for at least 10% less

I was doing exactly 98mph definitely not more, the van was on a gantry, it was so far ahead that I could not see the markings only the fact it was a van. It is a very flat straight road so it could easily have seen me. Did not see the operator, lets hope he was knocking one out in the van

Hello mate, Happy New Year.

Was on the M40, its not like me you are right, I would feel happy about 3 points if I was caught but am worried it may go straight to court.

No, a man on a bridge with the gun followed by a Police car that came down the slip road and stopped me. Copper was very reasonable!

98mph indicated - should be about 95mph then. If you did get caught, I'm sure it'll be a fixed penalty. Don't worry about it until it happens!

There's a lot less paperwork involved in writing a ticket than summonsing someone to court. Provided you pass the attitude test most cops will go for the easy option ...

Both the E90 M3 and the E93 vert speedo's were both 5% optimistic so your true speed would have been about 93 ish - this was measured against an Origin B2 GPS in the vert and a POGO Alert GPS in the M3. The digital speed readout that you can display in the middle of the dash is between the two (2.5% out).
