Guys diagnose my fault and give me an approximate cost. Going dealers on Thursday...

Hey guys. Service time. Need replacement of brakes (with sensor too I assume). Couple of services that have just gone red too . Not sure what they are...
(pics are blurry as my cousin took them whilst driving)

Any idea of cost if I take to the stealers?? Want to know what I'm paying for and any alternatives I have...

Car is running fine though.

Brake fluid is every two years, so 12/2009 is when it should have been changed.

Thanks creepycoupe clears that up nicely.

How much do brakes and fluid cost as a ballpark figure?

The car on the lift means a full service as opposed to oil service. Fluid will be £80, brakes £100 if only pads needed, service itself about £250.

You're looking at about a monkey all in.

Is the car in warranty? If not, don't go to a dealers - go to an independent as it's likely to be cheaper. Try Bexley Motor Werks in Bexleyheath

You'll be needing a few things doing, depending on which service interval it is and the mileage...

Oil change + filter
Microfilter
Air filter (possibly)
Rear brake pads
Brake fluid

You can buy your own oil and brake fluid if you want, and have the service place do the rest.

If under warranty haggle the quote and shop around, just because the cars booked in doesn't mean you couldn't change who does it.

I was referring to the symbol itself. I know the service is overdue you plonk! I referred to the manual I got and couldn't see the symbol. In the manual it states if the red exclamation mark with the brackets around it is lit, means brake fluid level is low NO reference to the 4th pic I put up.

And correction I meant 4th pic in post 3

It is not a full service. The first pic comes on when I start the car and usually means from my experience that I need the overdue services to be dealt with. PLUS I've had an oil change and filter when I had the fiasco with my car stopping randomly. I've got ages till I need to change the Microfilter likewise with any other service after these two.

This brings me to perhaps getting brakes and brake fluid done at Kwik Fit or Mr. Clutch (local). Doesn't seem like I need to do it at the dealers or a certified BMW specialist do I?

On mine I get an oil can for an oil service and the car on a lift for an inspection. Anyway, if you're out of warranty get it done elsewhere or DIY. The Mr. Clutch might not have the ability to reset the "mileage to go" on the brake pads but the other warnings you can reset yourself.

Just got a quote from a BM Specialist. Their prices are reasonable.

£90 for brakes
£24 for fluid

Do the brakes yourself.. really easy and it's about £30 for pads and £20 for sensors from a blueprint. When the pad sensors are gone it triggers the red lift light and the parking brake light. Once the sensor is replaced it will then tell you what still needs to be done. (you could always just connect the two wires in the brake sensor cable to fool it into thinking it's been done and then see what else is outstanding..

that won't work, the sensors are more complicated than that, just replace them

Really?! It just looked like two wires running down and then through a loop which i guessed wore away as the pads wore down, breaking the circuit.. guess not

Any idea how they do work? Just for personal knowledge..

It is every 2 years for the pollen filter. Normally done at same time as brake fluid change as the covers are off and it is cheaper in terms of labour cost to do the 2 together.

They hit the disc early on and start to wear down, the resistance changes and the miles remaining in the brake pads is estimated and displayed on the dash..... or something like that
