Foam pad choice
Hello, I have an 06 jet black 325i that has swirls in the paint. I am buying a kit with two different pads there are many options, what would be the best bet, one for polish and one for wax.
I'm thinking one orange and one black, very new at all this but am excited about knocking out the swirls! Thanks Last edited by BMWORD; 01-19-2010 at 07:38 PM.. |

Too many unknowns. What kit do you have? Does it include a PC or similar buffing machine? What polishes will you plan to use?
There are so many options we would need to refine exactly what you will be using. Based on what you've said so far I would suggest you can always apply the wax or sealant by hand if you have limited funds. That way you can focus on pads for removing the swirls with a machine. If the kit is only including 2 pads I would suggest an orange pad and a white pad and those are for removing the swirls and apply the wax by hand. Fill in some of the blanks and we can help you further.

Will you post pictures of your paint? It might help us make recommendations. I am guessing though that since your car is 4 years old and Jet Black that it's gonna be to swirled for a one-step polish. Like pander5 said, prepare to do a two stage polish with two polishing pads and then wax by hand.

I have a 200 budget (has to be invoiced at 200 or less without exception) , and have found some pretty good packages on the various sites that include polish and glaze a couple pads and porter cable 7424. Here are some of my choices for kits, need to order tonight... Thanks for all the help.

I'm leaning towards the pinnacle combo with a white pad added.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, sorry for the rush, this has to be invoiced tonight. Thanks for helping me out. |

You'll need orange and white on your car, IMO. You may be able to get away with just white. In any case, don't just get orange. It's not a finishing pad. If you get orange, also get white.
IMO get at least 2 orange, 2 or 3 white, 2 black or blue. You'll add more pads as you get more into it, but that's a decent minimum to begin with.

The supplies ordered are the pc 7424xp, pinnacle advanced swirl remover and advanced finishing polish. 1 orange, 1 white and 1 black ccs pad plus 2 microfiber bonnets (what are these used for?). I hope this combination is enough to get the job done. I plan to use these products in the order intended does anyone have any suggestions given what I'm working with?
Thanks again. |

damn one days notice huh...
for future reference, JET BLACK you will need orange for cutting, white for mid polishing, blue for final polishing, black for glazing/waxing and the polishes are up to you. I like menzerna, but its personal preference. I dont use the MF bonnets for polish removal, just use a MF towel |

I picked up the megs clay bar kit today to add to the detail I'm planning, does claying have to be done the same day as polishing or can I do it a few days ahead while I wait for the rest of the supplies to be delivered. Also is claying necessary if your going to polish car? Seems like the polish and pc would take care of all the stuff on the paint. I'm new at car detailing, so thanks for all this advice I look forward to posting the results. Thanks.

Yes, you can absolutely clay in advance of the polishing and that's probably a good idea to get that done before you start to polish and are waiting for your order to arrive. Claying is highly recommended IN ADDITION to polishing. Claying removes bonded surface contaminants from the paint that the buffer will not remove. Even if buffing does knock a contaminant or two off you don't want them in your buffing pad creating paint marring as you machine the paint.
Congrats on your new supplies and enjoy my friend! Wait till you see your car afterwards.

From your pics it looks like the typical "rainbow" colored swirls of the softer Jet Black. I would guess from that you have the softer JB and correction may be relatively easy.
The MF bonnets I tried one time for removing wax/sealant. I abandoned them because they clogged up with residual product to quickly. I went back to hand removal. The recommended process for them is to put a wool or soft foam pad on the machine then wrap the bonnet over the pad.

You can use the MF bonnets to do the final buffing of waxes and such. Just be sure that there's no pressure so that they don't induce marring, etc.

With the potentially "soft" jet black is it safe to use the orange pad and first step swirl removing polish before the white pad with the finishing polish? Sounds like those free bonnets autogeek threw in serve little purpose, thanks for the info on them.

Yes I have Jet black and use the orange pad and SIP and it works well. I have some scratches that may need the yellow pad and power gloss polish or they are under the clear which means the dealer or BMW repainted it at some point and did a crap job.

All this advice is needed thanks everyone and Jeff... Omg! I am more inspired than ever now, my car has the buffer trails hologram swirls as well, your may have been a bit worse... Maybe, when I clean the car I'll post exactly what I'm up against for further advice, but that after pick put a huge grin on my face, what a difference I can't wait to get this done and see my car for the first time as it was intended to look!
