Mass Air Flow Meter Replacement Cost?
Anyone know how much I would expect to pay for one of these from an independant and fitted?
After my remap it seems my car was hitting a brick wall at just over 3500rpm. Likely to be anything else other than this? Also, how easy are they to fit yourself?! |

No, no worry- MAF is Mass Air flow meter, its electric part, which secured to air box.

Any way of telling whether or not the MAF is faulty really?
I've often wondered if my MAF is somewhat what is responsible for the fuel economy I get ...

There is very good info on this site regarding MAFS
http://tuning-diesels.com/75Zt/R75maf.htm Dont be put off by the fact that its about rover 75's and MG ZT as they used a variant on the BMW M47 engine |

I've just replaced the air filter on my 320d, and that was far from easy, so if you need to be getting that kind of access to the airbox and you're unsure about doing then definitely get a garage to do it. (airfilter change meant removing lots of parts including engine cover, windscreen plenum, strut bar etc)
Robbo, read your review of P-Torque thanks, I'm booked in to see them tomorrow morning for a remap.. |

Thanks for the info, I guess I may be better just taking it to an independant and have them diagnose fully too. |

MAF replacement on these 4 and 6 cyl diesel engines is a fiddly involved job! One to avoid!

This is driving me mad. Can't find anywhere that has a reasonable price on a mass air flow meter and diagnostics. It's either cheap diagnostics and then really expensive parts or the other way around.
Just called one garage who are a bmw specialist and they said that a genuine meter would be £230. Am I stupid but is a bosche one not the genuine part? They said, no no we do not fit replicas. Am I wrong in thinking bosch are not really replicas!? I noticed this morning a bit of blue smoke from the exhaust. Do you think this could be another symptom? |

Get them in scrappys for about 50 notes or non bosch copys on fleabay for 80 quid... I spent an hour searching ebay and contacting folks for part numbers that they had, in the end I picked up a used working warranty'd Bosch MAF sensor for the huge sum of £9.99 plus £5.75 to post ! Fitting it is pants, just undo a jubilee clip and pull off the hose then open air box and undo the four nuts, then slide off offending article and replace with twin sister... Sorted... BTW I put "drives E36" as my main work horse is an E36 M3 EVO... My biatch drives an E90 and our weekend/cruise/jet is a 2009 Alpina Bi-Turbo... Last edited by TidyTony; 02-10-2010 at 11:55 AM.. If you wanted to you could take a couple of pic's before you start so you could refer to them when you start putting the stuff back... When I did the MAF on my E90 it took about 40 minutes and seeing as I had it apart I threw in a new filter too... |

Google has many guides but not specific to e90's...
You can get a general idea on what it involves but to get the whole indepth structure you'd need a repair manual... That or keep searching or asking someone to do a guide next time they clean theirs or replace it... |

I'm right in thinking things such as a Haynes manual doesn't exist for more modern cars? |

After removing some parts on mine the airbox is clipped rather than screwed like that one... Either way anyone needing to do a filter change or a MAF change can follow that guide as it shows you how to get into the guts of it in good detail... As for rough idle, is their an ICV in this engine ? I wouldn't know as I haven't got rough idle... (yet) I know ICV's clog up like a 30yr old fast food addict who eats a fry up every morning... |
