Smile Peeling Paint on Roof "gunnel" channels

My 2006 325i has peeling paint in my "gunnel" channels on the roof (where the attachements are for luggage carriers etc.) What kind of process or paint can I use to repair the peeling paint. The paint is peeling only on one side of the car, and the entire lenght of the channel. I could not find any answer in my search.

this was an issue on the early E90s.. Is your car still under warranty? My dealer replaced these shortly after I got the car out of "good faith" and didn't charge me anything. If you can't get it replaced, I guess you can remove them, sand them down and repaint them with a semi-gloss like rustoleum or trim paint.

If it is a 325, it should be a matte black, correct?

Fixing ours was $235 at the local body shop, if you are thinking of going that route.

yep when I got my windshield re-aligned, long story, they for some reason replaced the pass. side and I brought that up to them about getting the drivers side replaces cause of flaking and they said I would have to pay and its cheaper to do it myself with spray paint.

Although it doesnt bother me now as I have bigger issues

i got both of mine replaced last month by the dealership. first the dealership told me to get them painted at a body so i went to see how much it would cost and they said 400 dollars so i complained to the proper people at bmw (iam a BIG complainer) and they replaced them under my OPP for $50. its a very common problem with bmw on all the models with flat black roof rails. the next bmw i get has to have painted roof rails

Thanks folks, unfortunately the car is no longer under the original warranty. The part is a matte black. I wonder what kind of paint/sealer etc. I should use. I don't think it would be worth spending $300-400 dollars to have a paint shop do it. Should I sand it first, apply the paint, and then seal. Any advice what kind of paint and sealer I should use?

The moulding is peeling horribly on the passenger side of mine only. Mine has a matte black finish, so I just ordered the part from Tischer for ~$67.

If yours is painted, then it's ~$252 for the part already painted, or ~$63 to buy it primed. The part numbers for the painted versions are Here [RealOEM], but the black matte finish isn't listed (I called Tischer's Service Dept. and they gave me the part number, which order history doesn't show).

I don't know how to install it, however. I've heard that it just snaps on and off, usually taking the clips with it, breaking them (51137077127, $0.50). Does anyone have actual installation instructions to install it?

Any update on the install procedure for this?

I too need the part but Tischer website says no phone calls? I need the matte black one for 325i and don't have the part #.

Thanks

Is it only the railing that peels? Or the actual roof?

This past weekend I actually repainted the roof railings. Didn't do a DIY but it is very straight forward. Remove the roof railings with a screwdriver, starting from the back and working to the front. Sand the pieces down with 120 grit sandpaper. Then apply 5-6 coats of paint. The paint I used was Duplicolor Universal Flat Black. I got it from advanced auto. It matched the oem color almost perfectly and looked great when I was finished. Very easy job and only spent 10$ plus 1.5 hour time. Since finding the right paint was the hardest part, thought I would share the info. BUN1040 is the paint number. I will try and post up some pics tommorow.

Thanks! I am going to do this ASAP. Mine started peeling a few weeks ago and now look horrible.

Since they are some sort of plastic, I had mine vinyl-wrapped instead of sanding/painting. Cost me $45 at LTBMW, if you have access. It's been several months, and it looks so much better I don't even notice them any longer.

Why are you guys trying to paint it? Use plasti dip....

As for installation, start at the back, use a flat head screwdriver and use the windshield seal as leverage and pry it up. Loosen the first 2 or 3 clips and slide the rail back....it will come off after you slide it back a couple inches.

Yes some clips may break. Just replace the clips from the middle to the ones on either end. Or you can buy new ones....

You can get new rails that come already painted. They are like $60 each from tischer. Install is cake, just pop out the old ones and put in the new. Make sure you order the right part though - I think some cars have matte painted ones and some don't.

Yeah this really pissed me off. I bought a CPO with 40k miles and my friend was said BMW was great about warranty. I took it to the dealer at about 45k miles and they said it was not covered. They painted it for me but didn't do a very good prep job.
