Which gas I should use
Hi Guys
I just got a 2010 328xi. Which gas I should use for my car? 87? 91? or??I heard that BMW can use any type of gas because there is a converter build in the engine. Can I use 87? Thanks a lot! |

A lot of people will tell you yes..you can use it..but BMW recommends 91
The better question is ..why? I mean it saves you a few bucks every time you fill up...if you're on that tight of a budget, it should have been factored when purchasing your car... if you do decide to use 87 though, don't be surprised that your car will experience a loss in power because your car is working hard to compensate for the difference in octane

Premium unleaded...
Unless you lease, but then BMW will come get you if they found you the car was not properly maintained...

There is no converter in your car, but as any modern engine, N52 has an engine knock detector, which is used to adjust timing so that the engine can tolerate 87 octane fuel when there is nothing else available. Recommended fuel grade is displayed on a tag in the fuelling bay, it will remind you to use 91 octane. Many people me included use Shell 91 octane, since it is said to contain no ethyl alcohol.

Shell 91 V-Power.
I contacted Shell and V-Power does not have ethanol (see this thread: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=344509). It's not just about octane rating (i.e. 94 vs 91) but rather how "clean" the gas is as well. If 94 has ethanol and 91 doesn't, I'd go for 91. If 94 and 91 don't have ethanol but 94 is offered at a gas station that's not too busy, I'd still go with 91 (you don't know how old that 91 is or whether it's been sitting in the tank for a long time). |
