DCT Rifle Shot... a taste of things to come for the Americans
as i believe they're getting DCT this year.
I am unsure about the new exhaust so went and did some runs with my video camera to see how it sounded from outside. I also wanted to see what the back-fire sounded like outside too. As I've observed most dual clutch cars seem to make an unusual sound between shifts; i think in general i'd describe it like a 'far't' noise (Golf GTI's do it as do Audis). My new 335i was no different in stock mode. Since I had the exhaust done that 'fart' has become a rifle-shot back-fire. If the car is baby'd and allowed to chage automatically (mode 'D') then it just kinda farts. If however, the car is under laod and any revs greater than (say) 3krpm then the gearchange is like a rifle-shot. Gear changes at the top of the rev band are amazing. Given i'm travelling way from the noise, I was curious to see what it sounded like........ Seems the cicadas, wind (which I could've swore was non existent) and passing traffic have ruined my efforts to a large degree, but, hopefully you'll hear it well enough. Look out for the FAIL when I tried a WOT launch only for the DSC to kick in and ruin things as traction was broken. Need to find somewhere more discreet for this loutish behaviour!! What ikm wondering is, would (say) the bmw perf exhaust do the same?? This is a characteristic of the car and the exhaust either muffles ( stock) or exagerates (hitech)?? Wonder what an eisenmann would sound like :-):-):-) |

Yeah, I love that pop when changing gears, kinda like a F1 car sound.
Is it now much louder and constant even when warm? Mine, with stock exhaust does a really loud pop when cold going from 1st to 2nd and then when warm, just does a mild pop. |

Yup, louder (actually, i'm not convinced i totally like it), and constant at the appropriate Throttle opening (i'd guess 40%-60%).

Your pops sound a bit different than mine. Mine were more like backfires and extremely loud. Although the latest procede firmware seems to have almost stopped it now.

Yeah, would (perhaps) expect a difference in sound given a) the different 'states' of our cars (given you have a mod thats likely to impact the sound that I don't (yet ![]() ![]() However, the vid could be misleading as the rock-wall echo which i never thought of when I filmed it does kind make the sound diffeent. Will try again maybe this weekend. |
