any exhaust expert?

hi all experts, currently i have the PE exhaust in the my car. it sure has a nice tone, but i think that tone will somewhat annoy the wife.

so i had the x-pipe out, stock resonator back in, but it kills most of the sound.

if any exhaust expert can tell me the difference between x-pipe and 2 divorce pipe?

what if 2 straight pipes are in the place of the resonator, instead of x-pipe.
will the sound/tone makes any chance?

i wish... LOL
the reason why i went with PE is because cosmetically it looks totally stock, so she won't think i have an exhaust in there....... yea, you know those story of Mrs. bitching this and that....

i mean the worst comes to worst, i might just put the x-pipe back in, but in the meantime, i wanna see whats the difference between x-pipe and 2 divorced pipe, if so any difference in sound?

Should have just left the xpipe in... two divorced pipes will probably make it raspy and rough sounding (if the effect is anything similar to doing the same to the stock mufflers).

The resonator will just quiet it down quite a bit but where's the fun in that?

Your wife probably only hears the car during cold starts when it is at its loudest...

2 divorced pipes definitely does not automatically mean raspy and rough. Have you heard an AE exhaust? it's completely divorced and super smooth/no rasp/no drone.

But yeah, cold starts are loud no matter how you look at it. Maybe get her some ear plugs?

no, my more concern is the tone between 1500-2500rpm, the full PE system has a special tone, well, not too deep, not too loud, but definitely you can hear something on freeway cruising..... i was gonna see if that tone can be changed, if divorced pipe is installed. definitely with resonator is too tame.....

I'm running the AE quads on my car with catless DPs, so yes. You have to understand the AE system was designed as a fully divorced system and I'm sure something about the muffler design prevents it from sounding raspy... and this is just about the only fully divorced system that sounds good (read: daily drivable).

Have you ever heard a fully divorced stock muffler setup? It sounds like a fart can. And since the PE mufflers I'm sure have a more free flowing design, I doubt that will help the OP's cause in trying to quiet down an already tame (IMO) setup.

Ok, there's a thought...

OP: does your wife not like the way the car sounds from the outside? OR does it bother her only during cruising? Is your car AT?

ATs are notorious for cruising in the "drone zone". Maybe, you could put the xpipe back and add some very small resonators upstream, towards the 2ndary cats. Not sure if there's room to work with with the 2ndaries in place though...

interesting suggestion, yes, mine is AT... and i am just worrying when she sits in the car, not from outside....

but the resonator are pretty big tho... they are like 12-14 inch in length......

They are not big at all and a competent exhaust shop should be able to weld them in....I added some resonators to my fully catless exhaust and it did quiet it down substantially....Here is my thread about it...BTW....my car is also AT

you need to see if the exhaust system has any straight piping that is at least 14 inch long, if so, then you can weld them into place....I am thinking about adding another set to my exhaust to quiet it even more!!!
I love the sound now of my exhaust, but if I ever do add a second set, it will be really really quiet

no, i dont think there's gonna be any..... while 2nd cats are still intact....
i was trying to find something to make the sound sits in between the resonator and x-pipe, that will be perfect..... so far no luck... it's only either....or

Haha, problem solved I guess.

I was gonna suggest adding resonators in line WITH the 2ndaries in place as well, plus putting your xpipe back. That should just reduce the volume while keeping the tone with the xpipe.

yea, but that route is not gonna be possible, there's too little room in between the 2nd cats to the x-pipe

why?

not to be a party pooper -- but it sounds like you should stick with the stock system for the sake of argument ... if this is a deal breaker with the mrs. then spending money to modify the sound is counter productive.. the sound is the very reason you get this exhaust.. but i guess you have your own agenda..

good luck

plus youre not gonna gain a lotta power with the PE, so .. no sound, little power .. lots of money ?? what gives ??

yea, i understand..... i think i'll put the x-pipe back in.... whtever i may/will hear from the Mrs., just make up something to let it flow by
well, she already know 335i is not a Honda Accord or Toyota Camry, its not gonna be dead quiet anyway.... and if she does so, i may just pull up the 335is autospy videos and show her how the N54 sounds.... hope that will convince her.... even tho she knows how's my car sounds stock.... i can just trick her by saying the exhaust flap or something.....
