RFT's gotta go NOW! Suggestions?
After 12k miles, I've had enough.. the shitty RFT tires are outta here. Picked up a nail while in California on Friday. Thankfully I found a competent tire guy who would patch it. I might have been driving all over town on a leaky tire trying to find someone willing to patch a RFT. We all know the rear tires on a sport package-equipped E90 are unobtainium right now. Close call, and I don't want to deal with it again.
The other thing that made me get religion is the crappy SoCal roads. I'm spoiled now that I'm here in Phx where the major roads are all like pool tables. In SoCal, I don't think the RFT's would have stayed on the car for even a week.. brutally uncomfortable over much of the local maintenance-starved tarmac. Blech. I'm thinking Pilot Sport PS2's despite the hefty price tag. Had 'em on my R32 and they were the shiznit. Also had highly-rated Crapyear GS D3's on the R32 before the Mich's. but they sucked - sidewalls too soft, and lots of owners (this was the OEM tire) had issues with sidewalls bubbling after hitting relatively minor road hazard (i.e. pothole). Anyone else have a recommendation? I'm going to have new rubber on their by this weekend, come hell or high water!

if you use bmw assist to tow your car to the closest dealership, will they fix your flat for free (if not, how much does it usually charge, how much did you get charged by your tire guy?)?

If you can afford it go with the PS2's! Goodyears GD3 are good in the beginning and then they start to get noisy after wear. No other tires to really consider.

My plan is to sell my new 162 rims and rfts and get a set of 19" 178 composites with PS2s. Might keep the 162s for snows if I do not get a good offer.

I think I'll go PS2. What the hell, it's not THAT much more expensive than going with a lesser tire, so may as well go for what I (and many) perceive as the best option. Last question - I know that 162's are designed to accomodate runflats, but are they OK with regular tires too?

Update: last night I decided to go with Dunlop SP Sport Maxx's, because of glowing reviews, reasonable price, and good past experience with older Dunlops. Discount Tire showed them in stock in the local whse, 1-2 days to the store. Got a call at 9am, "sorry, they're on national backorder". Whoops. So now I'm going with PS2's, which is definitely a great choice, though a fair bit more expensive. They go on Saturday. Full report of first impressions shortly afterwards. I fully expect tramlining to be gone, ride comfort to improve, & handling & braking to improve.

Update #2: Maxx's are backordered, so I'm going with PS2's. Having had personal experience with them on my R32, I already know how awesome of a tire they are.. can't wait to experience them on the 3.

Way late to the party, but look forward to hearing about your PS2 experience. It's on my short list of tires along with the new contisport 3. I had conti 2's on my 19's before they became an OE tire and really liked them. Probably in the minority there, but they were very very quiet, and had a ton of wet grip ... which is important where I'm at.
