golf tee mod revisited with DPs

hey guys,

i know this is an old subject but has anyone recently done the "golf tee" mod but with non cat dps ??

the original golf tee mods were done on this forum about 2.5 years ago.
most reported a louder exhaust by around 20% under certain conditions.

1/ but anyone know approx how much louder the golf tee mod is when non cat dps are involved ??
2/ did any of you guys with the golf tee mod revert back to stock because of drone?

note that 2.5 years ago: most sedan owners did not hear a difference (added resonators in the sedan ?), whereas the coupe and e93 guys seemed to hear the biggest difference.

i have an e93 with full bolt ons and like my current sound - but if this mod does not make my car too loud - i may try it.

thanks

.

Why not spend 60 seconds and just do it? Probably would have taken less time than posting?

The noise increase really isn't that much IMHO.

Garage List
its all personal preferences. for me i had stock exhaust with x-pipe in my E90. i ran golf tee for 2 days and put it back to stock cuz it was somewhat annoying during highway cruising.
and then 2 weeks ago i had bmw perf. exhaust installed, due to the fact i know the US spec doesn't have the exhaust flap in the driver side muffler, i had the shop cut out my stock tip w/ flap, and welded it back on the PE muffler. i ran 1 day for the golf tee (true dual side) and i found it was also somewhat annoying on freeway during cruising speed, so i reverted it back to stock and let the vacuum does its job.

if you want loud (mainly in low rpm and light throttle), yes golf tee. if not then i'll stay stock and let the flap does its job.

i am out of town and will not be near the car for another week - also i am lazy LOL.

if u have a coupe and non cat dps - i would be surprised if it was not at least 15% louder.

WOW midlife...you have every conceivable bolt on except an exhaust....I didn't even realize that you are on the stock exhaust because I assumed u were modded to the gills and exhaust would have been status quo for such a car modded like yours!!!

Gave you an answer....I am wrong with the answer...My setup is only 3 quarts!

BTW you can fit the 2.5 gallon in that nice little compartment that the verts have, I originally had it in there, but wife told me for safety purposes with kids in car to have a smaller container, so I complied!!! All you need to do is make a custom bracket for it....This pic shows my tiny 3 quart tank, but I don't have the picture of it with 2.5 gallon tank in there....but like I said it DEFINITELY fits and the cover closes nicely

I had done the golf tee mod with everything else being stock and the car sounded nice on startup, but when the car was under load, it sounded like SHIT...farting sound on acceleration, with catless DPS I would think it would sound so much more SHITIER!

Where you live, you should get the 2.5 gallon tank...That location is the only location that you can do where its discreet and hiddent from view! Its very sneaky location!

i did. essentially, i have the stock exhaust, but i removed the butterfly valve all together and put in quad tips. i ran this with catless dps for half the summer last year (before removing them for warranty work). however, i never had the valves with the dps on, so i cant judge the amount of difference in terms of loudness.

without the valve + catless dps, the sound is pretty loud. doing the golf tee mod can only increase it more. if you like the sound you have now, i wouldnt touch it. cruising on the highways, i found the droning to be the most annoying aspect of it (the only time i wish i still had the valve). although somehow the gf fell asleep on the roadtrip even though i couldnt stand it.

cliff notes: car will sound a bit louder, the droning will get on your nerves. personally i wouldn't do the golf tee mod w. catless dps.

i had golf tee mod with catless dps and stock exhaust for about a year... sounds fine. A little louder but not by much. Mostly on cold startup.

thanks for the info:
I assume u had no drone ?
Also assuming u changed this setup for an aftermarket exhaust correct ?

How much different does your aftermarket exhaust sound now ?

i didn't have any drone. I swapped my stock exhaust out for a Renn-Art resonated full exhaust. It's pretty much as quiet as stock until you get on the gas WOT... then it's louder. Only prob is now i have slight drone between 1800-2200 rpm.

i used to have a catless ae exhaust on my car, but took it off to switch to quads. long story short, i put my stocker on, and forgot how nice it was to have a quiet car. with the catless dps, it sounds moderately loud, but still quite aggressive when i get on it. i keep trying to tell myself its time to get an exhaust again, but honestly i dont miss the attention and will probably keep my stocker

Stock exhaust with golf tee and catless dps sounds pretty good IMO not too loud when cruising but loud enough when you get on the throttle.

Anyone have a video of "golf tee" mod and catless downpipes with stock exhaust? I know on the E46 the "golf tee" mod didn't really do much of anything, I assume its the same on the 335i. Its mostly just placebo effect imo; but, the 335i exhaust might be different. On the E46 it was the same flap that was closed at low speed and opened up as you got on the throttle.

You asked, you shall get. I quickly did this at work with a short crappy vid of AR Catless DP's with Golf Tee Mod.
