Introduction - 2007 CPO 328xi Coupe

Hey Everyone,

I've been hanging around the forums for a little bit and am finally getting a chance to introduce myself. I bought an 2007 CPO 328xi (E92) at the end of last year and love it! It's Sparkling Graphite Metallic and has a 6MT with the sport package. It was a little tough finding a 6MT xi coupe but was well worth the searching.

There are some pictures below from the day that I picked it up. You'll notice the pics are actually in California - I was out there for work and bought it a few weeks before I left, then road tripped back across the country with it (the picture is the sunlight is at the top of Vail Pass in Colorado). Perfect trip to enjoy the car!

I've got a few minor accessories that aren't in the pictures: Mud Flaps/Splash Guards (IMO, a must for driving around here), WeatherTech Digital Fit floormats, and an E46 ZHP Shift Knob.

Thanks for all the info on here: the board has already helped out a lot and I'm sure it'll continue to help. Anyway...onto the pics!

Congrats, nice looking car! Who would have thought you'd find an xi in Cali?!

Looks like it has an aftermarket exhaust...any idea what it is?

Trip took about 8 days on the way out (had to do it that quick because of time allotted) and the trip on the way back was 10 days. Took a little more time getting back because I had some vacation time. You can take less time or more time - I'd recommend taking as long as you can though .

For the exhaust, as far as I know it's stock - didn't think it had any mods. What makes it look like it's aftermarket?

Nah, thats the 2007 328 stock exhaust. First model year the 328 didn't come with the chrome tips. Mine was the same way when I bought mine.

Anyways, welcome Nick!

How did you deal with the registration/plates? Did you bring MA plates or had dealer plates when you went to CA to drive the car back to MA?

Bump for this. I'm picking up a car out of state in May and am unfamiliar with the process.

The registration is kind of a pain, unless you can do it quick (drive it right back). Massachusetts has a "Seven Day" law that allows you to use the plates from your old vehicle for seven calendar days, as long as you lose possession of your old vehicle (replacing it pretty much). More info here: http://www.google.com/search?sourcei...+seven+day+law . It's a pretty sweet deal and I think that would work for most cases - the insurance policy even transfers for the 7 days.

I bought the car before I left California (drove it for a while there) then had to drive it back so this wasn't really an option for me. You can have the dealer ship the car back to MA and have the sale completed here (a friend of mine did that) or do what I had to do: register it, etc. in California, then when you get back to MA, switch the registration. Most states are reciprocal, so you don't have to repay sales tax. The only caveat here is if you pay less than the Mass tax rate (6.25%) you have to pay the difference when you register it here.

California is also weird in that it takes up to 3 months for you to get actual plates, so you drive around with no plates (like the pictures I posted), a sticker on the windshield, and papers in the car. I drove all the way home like that - thought it would cause a problem but ended up being fine.

I think I covered most of it...let me know if something isn't clear.

Thanks for the info! I think I'll be going the same route as you and having it registered out of state, then transferring it when I get back to MA. I'm looking into getting a car from California (no rust) and may spend some time visiting friends while I'm there.

I'm assuming California is reciprocal?

Yep, Cali is a reciprocal state with MA. When you go out there, keep in mind that sales tax rates are between 8.25% and 9.75% and, as far as I've been able to track down, you can't get refunded for registration/use tax.

Cars are in much better shape out there though - good luck!

Thanks for the info. I always thought I would pay for the MA sales tax and be able to drive the car back but the problem would be with what plates
I'm going to have to check with my insurance agent.
