Buying Gold
Does anyone here have any experience with buying 24k gold jewelry? I know it's not commonly sold in America except in Chinatown. So have any of you guys bought any? If so, were you able to talk them down in price or are they pretty firm on price because of the rising price of gold?

if you want it for jewelry, 24k is no good...
it bends way too easily 18k is the best for jewelry (some people even go up to 21k) but never 24k... "Chinatown give you goooood price, instead of 25 dolla, he give you 24.50..." :P :P

i know everyone says that 24k is not good for jewelry but everyone i know with 24k gold jewelry have no problems with it. In fact, most asian countries sell 24k gold jewelry. All the chinese people i know wont even buy any gold unless its 24k.

Yes you can talk them down. The price of jewelery = price of gold + worksmanship premium. You can always negotiate the second part. Actually in Chinatown you are EXPECTED to bargain so the formula is more like price of gold+worksmanship premium+bargaining premium

You should always try to negotiate the price at a Chinese jewelry store. I walk in and they offer me 40% off immediately at this one specific store, so I know their prices are BS and still high even with the discount.
24k gold is fine to wear everyday and they will deform. Depends on what you're getting, a ring for example is easy to fix since they just slide it onto a steel stick to make it round again. I used to wear a 24k gold chain around my neck when I was a kid. The chain was good as new after several years of use. To put it on or take it off, I actually bend the piece of gold at the end of the chain to make an opening or pinch it back together; that's how soft it was. |

Well..... i guess not everyone runs in multi-million dollar circles like you do. Honestly, how many average people can tell the difference between white gold, silver, and platinum just by a glimpse? I'll admit that I probably wouldnt be able to tell the difference just by a quick glance either.

Either way though, yellow gold is making a comeback for woman. Not men. Shits been played out. |

Also, I recall I asked my jeweler once regarding 24k jewelry and he said that no one in his right mind would make it as it is too hard to keep it's shape, it bends out of shape very easily.. I think all those people who told you it was 24k lied to you.

I've been to Beijing, Shanghai, Taipei, Singapore, etc...
I don't go jewelry shopping abroad. kind of stupid to put more money on something that is less reliable just so u can be all like "yo dawg, I gots 24k".. if it really is 24k that is, and not just 24k plated :/

Since you've been to all those places then you should know that they use 24k gold in jewelry. Not plated gold, solid gold. Even if you didn't go shopping there, i'm sure u saw the locals wearing it.
And who said i wanted it to be like "yo dawg, I gots 24k".... if that was my goal, i think i would go with a platinum chain with an "iced" out charm on it or something. I didn't ask for anyone's opinion on whether or not gold jewelry was "in" right now. I asked a question about pricing, not what's the latest in fashion. |

what? ok..... can we just get back on the fucking topic? yeah that's cool that u want to look like a rapper and be iced out cuz its in style now. just for the sake of argument, we'll just say that i want to look like an old school rapper with my gold chain. with that being said, can we get back to my original question instead of being all about what's in, what's out, and what's making a comeback.
