12V Power Outlets: only give juice with engine running?
Guys,
Is there no way of getting the 12V outlets to give power without the engine having to be running? The reason I ask is because I have a 12V tyre inflator and would rather not have the keys in the ignition with the car running while I walk around the car and check the pressures/top-up etc. Can never be too careful these days and I've heard numerous stories of people having their cars "jacked" when they were careless enough to leave the keys in the car/ignition. This is not a situation I want to find myself in! |

You can have them live without the engine running, but you have to have the ignition on (keys in the ignition).
Key in, DON'T put the clutch down, press the start button.

Thanks for that but the keys are still in the ignition right? So someone could, conceivably jump in and start her up and drive off, obviously I'd put up a fight but it's a situation I would rather not be in at all!! I would prefer to have the 12V going with the keys firmly in my pocket!! |

Unless you have comfort access....
I believe even without comfort access there is a way of starting the engine with the key out, so you could lock the doors with a window open for the pump lead. I think its: Key in, clutch down, start engine, keep clutch down. Then stop engine, remove key, start engine, clutch up You are left with engine running but key in your hand., great for defrosting Last edited by doughboy; 02-19-2010 at 06:49 AM.. |

The 12V Torch supply in the glovebox is on all the time.
If you get an adapter for this to convert it to a standard 12V socket, you could run your tyre compressor from it without having to faff around with the key/pedals/windows/etc. I think I paid about £12 quid for my adapter off Ebay a few years ago, it's a standard dealer part in the US but not so easily available in the UK.
