Jack Recommendation

Can anyone recommend a cood jack. Winter is fast approaching and I will need one to swap wheels/tires (probably go with the Tirerack special). Some posters were using a 1.5 ton Sears jack. I read the reviews at Sears and 7 out of 7 reviewers said the jack failed on them soon after buying it. Are there any other recommnedations. Thanks

Is that a hydraulic jack or a typical mini jack that is carried in the car. I was thinking more along the lines of a hydrualic jack to keep in my shed.

oh I see...the problem is the adapter.

If you're inclined, you can fashion out a mini adapter out of a block of wood and pretty much use any hydraulic jack. You wouldn't want to crush your plastic jack adapter blocks like I did

So that means that 100% of the Sears jacks must fail. I'm no statistican, but I don't think that the sample would be considered accurate. They've probably sold 1,000,000 of the jacks and 100 failed.

My 2-ton race jack from sears has been great, it even clears my car with H&R sport springs.

Obviously that is not a statistical sample. Seven would never suffice. Moreover, people who have bad experiences are more likely to write reviews that those that do not, thereby skewing your sample. With that said, Sears sells many types of jacks (SUVs, motorcycles, etc.). Some are far too large for my use. The reviews for those are much more mixed - some good some bad. When you see a product get panned by such a consistent number of people it makes you wonder. I just wanted to see if anyone else was using a jack they were happy with. And at this point, we have all spent way to much time disussing something as mundane as a car jack.

I've got a sear craftsman jack and it's worked great for the past 8yrs or so. Problem is the new jack blocks on the car are plastic and the sears saddle is cupped. Cuts the crap out of them.

I know lots of people use this:
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=91039

I plan to get one soon just because of the flat saddle.

Jacks aren't mundane, I use one virtually every time I work on the car. The only tool I use more often is my work light. So why not get one you like?

I think a lot of the jack failures are from people not RTFM. You're supposed to bleed it before using, otherwise it will have problems. Granted a jack may leak, but that can happen with any jack. If so, that's what the warranty is for

I have used the Crapsman 1.5 ton jack for about 2 years and haven't had any issues with it. And I use it a lot at driving schools.
It is low enough to use on my lowered m3. The saddle is a lot flatter on this jack than other craftsman jack I have (3 ton suv jack). It's almost flat if you use the rubber pad, but the Harbor Fright jack saddle is completely flat..

If you want a really nice jack, get one of these.

The 1.5 ton that looks like that is only like $79 (or was).

It has a rubber insert in the cup, which fits the E90 jack pads very securely... I tried to rock my car off the jack but couldn't.

Whatever hydraulic floor jack you end up buying, stay away from the SUV jacks that lift higher up, they won't be able to squeeze under the side of the car.

I just wanted to follow-up that I got the jack from Harbour Freight (see link above). The price was great ad it arrived in a week or so. It is perfect for this car. It fits the jack mount perfectly. The "cup" is perfectly flat and it works great. If you are thinking about getting a jack, I highly recommend this one.

Hi HeadlessChicken,

I am also interested in the Harbour Freight Jack. Could you measure the saddle and see if Josh's adapter would fit?

See:

Thanks!

I don't have the measurements with me but I am sure it will work. The saddle on the HarbourFreight is about the same size as the Craftsman in the picture from your link. There really is no need for the adapter as the plastic parts fits the saddle great. There is about 1/4-1/2 inch on either side of the plastic part when the saddle is in contact with the jack point so that adapter would fit the jack fine.
