JB3 Wear and tear on the 335i
How much does the JB3 wear on the 335i turbo's and transmission after long term use. Im just trying to find out if there is any downside to this mod. Will it shorten the life of the turbos? Will anything be negativly effected? Im talking about stage 3

No stages. Maps.
Map 7 is normally used with all boltons. No one answer - depends on how its driven. Some halfshafts have broken at the track - but few.

The reality is you are turning a 300hp motor into a 400hp motor. So if you use the wrong maps, wrong gas, don't change your oil as often as you should, drive like a crazy man and/or neglect the car you may reduce the life of your car, tuned or stock. Saying that most tuned cars, and especially those run on higher maps and stages are driven by enthusiast who care for the car and provide it with the supporting mods, fluid changes and overall preventative maintenance to ensure it last a very long time. These engines have shown to be very resilient so if you follow your tuners directions then you shouldn't have much to worry about. If you are going to get the JB3, you can PM me and we can discuss the best maps for you Mike |

Probably 300-400 1/4 mile, and 0-130 mph runs in the last year and a half and no problems. Map#7 on 91 octane, mostly without any supporting mods.

It does, there is nothing stopping anyone from doing it anyway.

this question is what i ask myself everytime i go on Vishnu's website and Burger Tunings website. I would LOVE to get a JB3 2.0 or a V2 version w/e, but I just don't think the internals on these motors are designed for such an increase in power. now if you redid the head and reinforced all the internals, sure, bump it up to 600hp --- but after paying $55,000 and having a $500 part that YOU put on your car, give the SLIGHTEST BIT CHANCE TO destroy a $10,000-$15,000 motor doesn't make sense to me.

its almost not even fear.
i put on kw v1 coilovers on my car. my headlamps were TOO low. i did the proper thing - and learn that the headlamps can be adjusted. took the BMW screw driver. aimed them up. one day, they are aimed to the ground. try to aim them up. does not work. take car to bmw service (park ave in NJ). they said car is too low, thats as high as it goes. i make a big stink about buying 6 cars there, they take me in. tell me i tampered w/the headlamps and they won't warranty them since they have been "tampered" with and they are not warranty-able. they want to give me one headlamp, labor, and i pay out of pocket for one headlamp. i said no dice. bmw used to promote a racing heritage and owners being individuals, hell they had a 3 series video which shows bimmerfest and drifting, but they want to be Nazi's when it comes to n54 owners. doesn't make sense. i don't want to give them a reason to me w/anything. i keep the car as OEM as possible - but have a dual cone intake, oil catch can, and a muffler delete. everything else. stock.

I wouldn't worry as much anymore. People have been pushing a lot of psi without breaking any motors or trannys (but, clutches are worn out). Also, since the PPK kit came out and the new 335IS, you have to think that the engine and tranny can handle more power safely since BMW is getting more power from the car.

I change oil once a month and run map 5 on 91 but that is my choice and I never say you will be 100% ok doing this. It is not possible to say your car will only last XXXXX miles with any particular mod. It is a roll of the dice. More boost can reduce the life of the engine and related parts for sure, but I doubt you will keep the car long enough to experience this. Most of us trade these cars in every 2-3 years and put less than 40,000 miles on them.

I think it is safe to say that it has been proven that the stock turbos are not capable to produce enough power to directly overload the engine, gearbox or differential. Well-designed tunes and supporting mods is a part of the success.

Good point R1000K3...
I have a 2007 E92 335i that has been tuned since about 4K miles, i have over 30K and i have run the JB3 on Map5-7 on a otherwise stock car for over 20K miles. Car runs perfect..Datalogs with everything in line, makes good power on the dyno and runs good at the track, and still going I wouldnt say i drive it like i stole it everyday but i def get on my car WOT a couple times in a day. I do change my oil/oil filter every 3-5k miles, service my air filter often, let my car warm up to 210 degrees before goin to redline and let it idle/cool off before i shut it down prior if i beat on it. |
