Why are we not seeing more turbo upgrades?
I was hoping that by now we would have at least one option for an upgraded turbo kit.. ASR as far as I know is the only one with any dyno results and videos. Why is it that the E46 M3 has had Horsepower Freak kits out for quite some time now, but they cant release a turbo kit for a factory turbo car? I am just thinking about the amount of stage 3 335i's on this forum that probably want more power as well.. I mean as of right now the 335i is basically maxed out around 440rwhp w/ meth.. At least give us an intake manifold and some camshafts which could be worth another 30-40rwhp. Aren't there any other Stage 3 335i's out there that want 500+rwhp on pump gas?

The car is still relatively new...plus the economy sucks, i'm sure tuners are seeing down sales right now in general, it makes it tough to put money into new products...

Ya, I know it would be faster, better handling, meaner sounding, and fun to drive... But I also wonder if I will be losing some quality when switching to a Chevrolet.. The interior in the Vette looks a little cheap when compared to the E92. I just don't want it to start creaking and making noises..

If I were you I would wait for turbo upgrades, that extra 3 grand could be spent on that (maybe a little more) but probably give you a lot more potential and you'll keep the "class"/interior of a bmw

turbo upgrades will most likely cost more than that and wont give him more potential than a LS3, not even close.

^I agree as far as potential goes if you're not considering a drastic sc/turbo kit for the corvette, but if jpsimon's turbo upgrade is 3-4 grand IMO that would make more power than a corvette with those mods would

I really just want at least 500rwhp out of the 335i on pump gas...preferably even without the need for methanol. That would be nice, accompanied with an LSD and room for some 305's!

No LSD in a car that is making 400+rwhp is not fun, an LSD just makes sooo much of a difference... my previous car "E46 M3" felt much better coming out of corners. I know the huge difference in torque makes the E46 M3 easier to power on early, but I don't know.. you can just really "feel" the difference when an LSD is present.

Their stage 1 upgrade has been out for some time, costs are at around 800 GBP (per turbo), a bit more for a wastegate upgrade. Their stage 2 upgrade is currently being tested (by E92Fan) and - among others - a set of turbos I sent them will serve as a prototype for that. So TD has a working Stage 2 upgrade? The Stage 1 (otherwise known as a compressor only upgrade) has been done by several other shops over time and is very simplex (and hence very inexpensive). Over this time I think what has been realized is that.... its just not worth it- the gains just are not substantial. You really need to upgrade the turbine/centersection to have much of an upgrade, which is much more of a difficult task. AFAIK ASR is the only one to have accomplished that.

I saw someone mention that ASR turbo was available if you call them? They just arent publically going out on this forum anymore I suppose due to some altercations with a few members I think? (IDK thats what I read somewhere else).
Regardless, in terms of other turbo upgrades, i'll believe them when I see it. Excuse my tone here, but my last car and the vendors/fanbois made a bunch of promises for years of alternative solutions (specifically an aftercooler for supecharged applications), keeping people on their toes for about 3 years (maybe 4 at this point)... Now that amount of time would be fine, except every 6 months they would post a date of completion, then come up with an excuse, so why even bother with the completion dates if they never planned on being met. That was the real problem. It has yet to come on the market and like I told them in my original call out thread, "I will probably own a different car if this thing ever comes out" sure enough I have another car and its still not out LOL. In the meantime, only excuse I can make for the lack of upgrades is, the small market, as we can see a lot of people tend to be price sensitive despite the cost of the car, and the process of designing the turbo kit is a little on the tedious side, especially in terms of room on this car, let alone the fact that the turbo is welded to the manifold (which is retarded). There are options for upgrades as rob mentioned above, but tend to not be significant enough for the cost, work, and install. |
