Get some gloves on with little rubber grips or something to that sort

Open the armrest, and use your hands to pull the left-rear corner of the trim straight up. It will unclip. If you have idrive, unplug the knob. Slide your hands toward the front of the console and pop up the transmission trim from the underside. Unplug the plug going to the ashtray/lighter (if you have 08 or 07) and pull the trim out, while maneuvering the transmission trim through the opening. It's really easy, and should only take you a minute. Sorry don't have pics, but this is a really simple job that requires no tools except for some gloves.
